Winston Ortiz was a 18-year-old died after he was stabbed and set on fire in the hallway of a Bronx apartment building on Wednesday afternoon, the police said.
Young Winston Ortiz was found in flames and unconscious just after 3 o’clock. On the fifth floor of the building at 1045 Woodycrest Street near Yankee Stadium, police said. Police said he had multiple stab wounds and died hours later in a hospital in Harlem.
Police said that Mr. Ortiz had argued with Adonis Betances in the building just before he was killed, and detectives believed the dispute was about Mr. Ortiz’s recent departure with his girlfriend.
“It was some sort of ongoing dispute,” one law enforcement official said, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss an open investigation. “That relationship caused this to happen.”
On Thursday afternoon, Adones Betances, 22, who was identified as the brother of the former girlfriend, was arrested on murder and manslaughter charges, the official said.
The gruesome killing comes as New York City wrestles with a spike in violent crime. So far this year, shootings are up nearly 75 percent over the same period last year, and homicides have risen by about 30 percent.
Police said he lived a block away from where Mr. Ortiz was killed.
Family members and neighbors described him as a young man who seemed close to his two brothers and family, focused on school and baseball. They said he graduated from high school and planned to go to college.
Her aunt Victoria Cruz said that Mr. Ortiz and other family members visited her home in Virginia days before her death. He said he looked hopeless along the way.

Truck driver Jose Suarez, who lives on one floor of the Ortiz family, said he rarely saw Mr. Ortiz socialize with other teenagers on the street. He said he could not find “anything negative to say” about Mr. Ortiz or his family.
Trishell Figueroa, who is also a resident of the building where Mr. Ortiz lived, recalled seeing the teenager walking through the corridors, often carrying a Bible in his hand. He said he played baseball and was “always with his family”.
“It’s so sad because I haven’t seen anything other than going to work and going to church,” said Ms. Figueroa, who has lived in the building for nearly 14 years.
50-year-old Alex Paulino often visits the building as their two children and their mother live there. Mr. Paulino said that the news of the murder gave goosebumps. He said he went to church with his family several times.
This is a good family. They go to church three times a week, ”said Mr. Paulino. “I won’t sleep, I’ll just think. Because I have two daughters here.”
