Who is Milka Djurasovic ?

A Perth mother with a mental illness who killed her two young daughters before attempting to kill herself has been acquitted of her murder due to mental illness.

Milka Djurasovic, 40, faced trial with only one judge on the Supreme Court of Western Australia.

Killed

She admitted to killing her daughters Mia, 10, and Tiana, six, whose bodies were found by her father Nenad at his Madeley home in October 2019, but argued that she should not be held criminally responsible. for her actions.

Judge Stephen Hall found on Wednesday that Djurasovic’s mental illness had been of such intensity that he had deprived her of the ability to know that she should not commit the crimes.

He found Djurasovic not guilty of the girls’ murder and ordered that she remain in detention until she was released by order of the state governor.

Statement

A consensual statement of events presented to the court described how Djurasovic woke up around 7 am on the day of the killings and thought to herself “today is the day”, and subsequently placed knives, machetes and ropes in the pantry.

Tiana cried when she saw the rope and knives and asked her mother ‘are you going to do something to me?’ and saying that she wanted to go to school.

Djurasovic “shot out” and got the girls ready for school, sounding upbeat and normal on the phone when she got a call from her husband.

At the school gates, she parked for several minutes before deciding to drive home and told Tiana that they were going shopping.

Later that morning she decided to proceed to kill the girls and herself, plugging a vacuum cleaner into the wall and leaving it on to drown out any sounds.

After killing her daughters, Djurasovic paced the house before kissing and hugging the girls and placing toys next to her bodies.

Girl Father

She then made several attempts to kill herself and recorded a video in which she repeatedly apologized and urged her husband to let her die.

The girls’ father came home that afternoon to discover Mia’s body, and paramedics later discovered Tiana’s body.

Police found Djurasovic a short time later covered with a blanket in sand dunes on a nearby beach, after trying again to end his life.

Several notes that Djurasovic had typed or handwritten were found in the house.

“ I love my girls more than anyone and anything and I’m sorry I didn’t take better care of them, ” he wrote.

‘I should have been more’ connected ‘to my husband and my friends. I didn’t like talking about my problems. I wish I had. I’m really sorry for everything. ‘

Djurasovic also wrote to her husband, telling her that the girls were already nervous and anxious and that she did not want them to ‘end up taking medicine, taking drugs and all of that is killing me.’

“I am to blame for everything,” she wrote in the letter, translated from Serbian.

“I didn’t do anything wrong on purpose, but that’s how it ended.”

Djurasovic twice in custody

Psychiatrist Adam Brett, who interviewed Djurasovic twice in custody earlier this year, said he was confident that the defendant was mentally disabled at the time of the crime and did not have the ability to know that she should not do such a thing. .

He said Djurasovic had nihilistic delusions and believed that she was saving the girls from the ‘horrible things’ that she had experienced.
