The arrest has led to comparisons with the AMC Breaking Bad series, in which a high school chemistry teacher began producing methamphetamines for additional income after being diagnosed with lung cancer. Ironically, Rowland spoke in 2014 about his love for the program in a report for the Henderson State University student newspaper.

Terry David Bateman and Bradley Allen Rowland, both associate chemistry professors at Henderson State University in Arkadelphia, were arrested by Clark County Sheriff Jason Watson. Bateman, 45, and Rowland, 40, were accused, according to a press release, of the Clark County Sheriff’s Department of producing methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia. Similar to the chemistry teacher at Walter White High School.

A spokeswoman for the sheriff’s division told TIME that Rowland had made bail and would be released from prison.

Tina Hall, vice president of marketing and communications at the university, told TIME in an email that teachers have been on administrative leave since October 11.

Hall said the university’s science center was closed on October 8 “based on a report on undetermined chemical smell,” and initial tests revealed “a greater presence of benzyl chloride” used to make methamphetamine in a laboratory. It can be a laboratory. The building was reopened later on October 29 after third-party tests revealed that it “meets all occupancy recommendations,” he said.

Terry Bateman & Bradley Rowland Charges

Terry Bateman and Bradley Rowland have both been charged with manufacturing meth and use of drug paraphernalia. They were arrested on November 15 and booked into the Clark County Jail.

Investigation Reports

It was not immediately clear whether Bateman and Rowland were specifically accused of using a school laboratory to cook meth. But Henderson State University spokesperson Tina Hall said that the chemical spill that happened in October was part of an ongoing investigation.
