Shatavia Walls, a 33-year-old Brooklyn woman, was shot and killed after she asked a man to stop setting off fireworks. On Friday, July 17, Walls succumbed to the injuries she received on July 7 when she was hit by gunfire in Brooklyn. On July 7 around 8:30 p.m., Walls and her 30-year-old companion, Kelvin Hernandez, were at 1259 Loring Ave. in the Pink Houses when a dispute with a man turned fatal, the NYPD told the New York Post.

According to the police, Walls confronted a man performing an unfair firework display and asked him to stop. The man then left and turned with a gun and said that he shot Walls and Hernandez while the police were trying to escape. The walls were hit eight times, and Hernandez was shot in the arm. Both moved to Brookdale University Hospital Medical Center, where Walls died of wounds after 10 days.

In June 2020, Brooklyn County chief Eric Adams asked residents to avoid reporting 911 or 311 illegal fireworks. At a press conference, Adams called on residents to “talk to young people trying to go or young people using fireworks” and to explain the dangers. He said the goal was to avoid “heavy policing”.
“We want a good community response to deal with problems,” Adams said. “This is non-violent action. So the three numbers that we all dialed, 911, overcame this. He said community organizations should encourage residents to avoid illegal fireworks and parents should be involved. “These are real dangerous instruments, you may lose your arm, you may lose your eyes, you may lose your life and your parents should know … Your children should not play with it,” he said.
After Walls crashed into a firework dispute, Adams said, “In the case of innocent behavior, the first line of interaction should be between neighbors. If a situation rises to the point where someone turns into disrespect or violence, the police should be called. “We can never ignore violence and never ignore violence. The person who shot Ms. Walls should be found and held criminally responsible. In this terrible event, my heart goes to her and her whole family. “
