Sharon Carolyn Balli, narcotics captain of the NYPD plans to file a lawsuit against the department, claiming that another captain repeatedly harassed her with questions about her sex life — and that she was targeted with an Internal Affairs probe after complaining about him.
Sharon Carolyn Balli, the first female Indian-Guyanese ever made captain and a retired Army major, filed her notice of claim with the NYC’s Comptroller’s Office on Thursday seeking $5 million, the notice reads.
“I’m not an average female,” Balli told the New York Post.
“And yet this is extremely disrespectful on so many different levels and it’s quite scary.”
Her workplace was a “boy’s club,” she alleged. “I’ve been living six months of hell.”
Balli, who is assigned to Manhattan South Narcotics, had complained about a fellow captain after he allegedly repeatedly asked about her sex life, the notice reads.
“While reviewing narcotics operation protocols, he has blatantly asked about Claimant’s and her husband’s sex life,” according to the notice.
Do you have great sex? and recalled that, according to the statement, she said, “You need to have more sex.”
It also claims that the captain tried to enter [sic] several times while [o] showering from December 2019 to June 2020, the captain tried to enter the joint manager bathroom.
He also allegedly tried to catch Balli undressing repeatedly, using a spare key to break into his locked office, according to paperwork.
He also claims that another colleague made immoral comments, but when he reported the allegations, an assistant investigator said to him that he should “deal with this” and “I’m telling you to stop and turn off f-k.” The New York Post reported.
Balli later filed a complaint to the Employment Opportunity Commission, saying that it only created a “toxic, hostile work environment”.
Now, after installing a camera in his office, he says it was the subject of an Internal Affairs investigation to see if his two colleagues went there while he was away.
Bali’s claim says that the captain mentioned in his complaint was unable to recover the footage allegedly found.
According to the report, he believed someone had thrown the tires on his bike and added something to his coffee that would make him sick.
“We will review the case when we receive service,” said a NYPD spokesperson.
