Jakrapanth Thomma was identified as the suspect in a Korat, Thailand mass shooting that left a trail of people dead on Saturday, Feb. 8th, 2020. Disturbing videos circulated on Facebook as it emerged the suspect is accused of live streaming portions of the massacre. The hashtag #koratshooting trended on Twitter throughout Saturday. The city of Korat is located about 155 miles from Bangkok, Thailand. The site reported that he also went to a home in the city and shot and killed two people in the course of the rampage. The alleged shooter is a sergeant major.

Jakraphanth Thomma is a junior officer, killed his commanding officer before stealing weapons from a military camp, a defense spokesman told Thai media.

Terminal 21 Korat is part of a small chain of Thai shopping centers run by Bangkok-based property developer LH Mall & Hotel Co. The malls feature floors modeled after major cities around the world.

The alleged killer stole a Humvee from his base and then proceeded to drive around the city on a shooting spree, the media quoted police in the north-east as saying.

The soldier is alleged to have shot at shoppers inside a mall in the city. He took a selfie during the attack and posted it onto social media.

It began in Nakhon Ratchasima, also known as Korat, in the late afternoon at the Suatham Phithak military camp, where the commanding officer, named by the Bangkok Post as Col Anantharot Krasae, was killed.

The suspect seized arms and ammunition from the camp before taking a Humvee-type vehicle.

He then opened fire at a number of sites before arriving at the Terminal 21 shopping center.

The Bangkok Post reported that the soldier killed in the attack was Thomma’s commander.

There were “20 deaths, 12 wounded,” said an unnamed official from Bangkok’s Erawan Center, a dispatch center for the national emergency services who collate hospital information.

Local media footage appears to show the suspect getting out of his vehicle and firing shots as people flee.

CCTV footage shows him inside the shopping center with a raised rifle.

Other footage showed a fire outside the building, with some reports saying it was caused by a gas canister that exploded when it was hit with a bullet. One of the suspect’s social media posts features an image of himself with the fire in the background.

The shooter appeared to be armed with an assault rifle, based on a security camera video aired on Thai Rath television. Thai Rath said the incident began at about 3:30 p.m.

Thomma live-streamed the massacre on Facebook and posed for selfies. “The gunman used a machine gun and shot innocent victims resulting in many injured and dead,” said Police Col. Krissana Pattanacharoen, the police spokesman, to Bangkok Post.

Disturbing videos would later emerge on Facebook showing the chaos and gunfire throughout Korat. One shows the situation in the shopping mall. You can hear gunfire and people shouting in Thai.

Thomma Facebook was brought down saying, according to Bangkok Post: “Our hearts go out to the victims, their families and the community affected by this tragedy in Thailand. There is no place on Facebook for people who commit this kind of atrocity, nor do we allow people to praise or support this attack.”

According to Daily Mail, his Facebook posts included things like “should I surrender” and “no one can escape death” and “I’m tired… I can’t pull my finger anymore” and “It is time to get excited.”

The suspect also wrote on his now-deleted Facebook page “Death is inevitable for everyone” and posted a photo holding what appeared to be a gun, according to Al-Jazeera.
