Semaj Miller is a 14-year-old standout basketball player from Compton who was shot and killed in South Los Angeles on July 29th, 2020. More than a hundred community members gathered for a vigil in Compton Thursday, August 6th, 2020 in honor of Semaj.

On July 29, police responded to the 100 blocks of East 87th Place around 2:20 p.m. for a report of a shooting and arrived to find Semaj Miller lying in a driveway, the Los Angeles Police Department said.

The 14-year-old boy was unconscious, unresponsive and later pronounced deceased, police said. Investigators do not yet know who shot him or what the motive was.

Family members say Miller was on his way to the park to play basketball at the time of the shooting.

The teen was a basketball player for the L.A. City Wildcats, an organization that helps educate and build character for young men, according to its Instagram page. The nearly 6-foot-7-inches tall athlete was deemed for greatness, his loved ones say.

“If he stayed in line, did everything he was supposed to do, he wasn’t going to college — he was going straight to the NBA,” said Tony Thomas, a coach at Compton High School who mentored Miller. “He was going to be a combination of Anthony Davis and Kevin Durant.”

Semaj started playing basketball at age 11. He started getting better and better – and kept growing and growing, reaching a height of 6 feet 6 inches by age 14.

He played ball for the Wildcats Youth Academy, which was established a few years ago to give young people a safe place to learn and have fun.

Semaj Miller was a rising basketball star and a standout at the youth basketball program, L.A. City Wildcats. Loved ones say he was a promising athlete.

Semaj Miller was gunned down the afternoon of July 29 near Main Street and East 87th Place. Police believe a gang member may have carried out the shooting. The suspect remains outstanding.

Hundreds of friends, family and community members appeared at a vigil for Semaj on Thursday, mourning the young man who was described as having a bright future.

Semaj’s mother, Paloma Miller, described him as a kindhearted young man with a passion for sports.

“He just gave me a wonderful, loving, great 14 years,” she said. “He just wanted to be a part of something.”

Semaj was on the radar of several schools. He chose Compton High School and was expected to play on the varsity basketball team in the fall.

Compton Mayor Aja Brown said it warmed her heart to see him grow up and hone his skill at local parks.

“He was one of the most humble, yet talented young men that I knew,” she said. “He was so responsible.”

Taloma said, although she is heartbroken, she wants to try to remain positive and focus on how her son touched so many lives in such a short amount of time.

“I forgive them,” she said of the person who shot Semaj. “I just will never leave the memory of my son behind.”
