Robert Lloyd Schellenberg Wiki: Robert Lloyd Schellenberg is a 36 years old Canadian who grew up in Abbotsford, British Columbia, surrounded by a large extended family. He kept occasional contact with his family as he roamed around Asia, especially his favourite country, Thailand. He was arrested in 2014 on suspicion of drugs trafficking.
Robert Lloyd Schellenberg Death Sentence
As per The New York Times, Schellenberg was arrested in 2014 and received his original sentence (15 years in jail) in 2016 for drugs smuggling in a case that went unnoticed. Before his first trial, Schellenberg was detained for 15 months and it took an additional 32 months before a court declared him guilty and sentenced him to 15 years in prison.
He was on Monday, January 14th, 2019 sentenced (in one day) to death for drug smuggling by a Chinese court after it overrode his plea of innocence at a retrial that had been swiftly called after tensions erupted between Canada and China. The sentence is expected to sharply escalate China’s diplomatic row with Canada and the United States.
Western legal experts and Schellenberg’s relatives condemned the ruling stating that China is using Schellenberg as a bargaining chip in its efforts to free a top technology executive detained in Canada. Huawei Chief Financial Officer Meng Wanzhou was arrested at the Vancouver airport on December 1st, 2018 at the request of the United States, which wants her extradited to face fraud charges.
China expressed its outrage at Meng’s arrest and warned Canada of “severe consequences” if she were not released. In the weeks following her detention, the Chinese authorities detained two Canadians living in China on suspicion of national security crimes.
The Chinese government in the January 14th trial took the rare step of inviting foreign media to attend his appeal hearing — prompting speculation that Beijing wanted to use Schellenberg’s case to exert pressure on Ottawa.
The Dalian Intermediate People’s Court confirmed Schellenberg’s new sentence in a brief statement on its website, stating that it would provide more details later.
