The Manti Te’o hoax story continues to get weirder by the day. According to a report from the New York Daily News, Manti Te’o, who thought he was talking to a female (Lennay Kekua), was really chatting it up with the man behind the entire hoax, Ronaiah Tuiasosopo. The Heisman Trophy finalist “thought it was a female he was talking with,” lawyer Milton Grimes acknowledged to the Daily News. “It was Ronaiah as Lennay.” “This wasn’t a prank to make fun,” Grimes told The News. “It was establishing a communication with someone. … It was a person with a troubled existence trying to reach out and communicate and have a relationship.” ESPN reported that Te’o made 1,000 phone calls and spent over 500 hours talking to the same person in the 661 area code of Lancaster, Los Angeles County. Ronaiah, who has yet to make a public statement, is the one singing in the video above. Te’o’s interview with Katie Couric will air today at 4 pm.

Around 2 pm, Pennsylvania State Troops were sent to the State Gamelands Gun Range on Sansom Road in Green Township, where three victims were involved in a conflict.

“The first investigation revealed that Robert Allen Eppley, 26-year-old North East PA, died on the spot,” said Heather Kittle of Pennsylvania State Police.

State police said Eppley had repeatedly shot at the known victim. He was eventually transferred to an Erie hospital.

“PA started shooting from Erie at a 28-year-old man,” Kittle said.

Also from Erie, a 67-year-old male observed what was happening and allegedly shot Eppley multiple times.

Trooper Kittle added that these multiple gunshots caused Eppley to die on the spot.

There were more than one witnesses at the scene. This is how we have determined throughout the investigation so far that Eppley fired down from range, came back and started shooting at the victim, ”Kittle said.

An autopsy is scheduled for Eppley at 11am in County Morgue on Wednesday, December 23rd.

The 67-year-old male suspect is currently in custody.

“He is being interviewed. The investigation is still ongoing. I have no details on how this is going,” Kittle said.

The Pennsylvania Games Commission closed Gamelands in gun range until further notice.
