He is one of the case agents who is continuing to investigate the Feb. 23 shooting of Ahmaud Arbery by Greg McMichael, 64, and his son Travis McMichael, 34. Richard Dial on Testifies on Arbery Case
On Thursday, June 4th, Dial detailed the events that lead up to Arbery being shot down in the Brunswick neighborhood. According to his testimony, Arbery was running and stopped at the construction site on the day and left not soon after. Dial in his testimony says a neighbor called 911 to report that a man was in the unfinished home. At that point, Greg McMichael was in his front yard cleaning furniture for his boat when he saw a man running down the road. He went inside his home to tell his son, Travis, that the man looked like the same one who was in a video posted on a local Facebook group that stated on Feb. 11 a robbery occurred at the construction site and to grab his shotgun and get in the truck.
During this time, Dial reports that neither of the McMichaels called 911 at this point and began their own pursuit. At some point during the chase, Bryan notices the altercation after one of the McMichaels yells, “We got him.” Bryan pulls his truck from his driveway and blocked him in. As the pursuit continues, Arbery is redirected several time, in order to avoid the men.
Bryan’s cell phone footage, which was widely shared on news and social media, did not show the whole story, according to Dial. During the chase, Bryan put down his phone but audio could still be heard.
The GBI obtained additional video from neighbors, phone records and internet searches. They also obtained a prison phone call, where Greg McMichael tells the person on the phone that Bryan is an “ally.” Dial testified that the driver of the second pickup truck, Roddie Bryan, said Travis McMichael then stood over Arbery’s body and said a racist epithet before police arrived.
