Onoval Perez-Montufa, 51, died in a Palm Beach County hospital on Sunday afternoon, according to US Immigration and Customs Enforcement reports. He conducted a positive test for COVID-19 on July 2 at Glades County Detention Center in Moore Haven, west of Lake Okeechobee. Health personnel at the facility began treating him the day before he complained of shortness of breath.
Perez-Montufa was initially detained after his release from the federal prison in Massachusetts, where he served for cocaine distribution for 12 years. He was in custody for ICE’s removal to Mexico.
An El Salvador man died in May after performing a positive test for coronavirus at the ICE facility in San Diego, California. A Guatemalan man died at the end of that month in the town of Lumpkin in Georgia.
