Oleg Valeryevich Sokolov is a Russian historian of the Napoleonic era. He is well known for reenacting moments of Napoleonic history.

Sokolov was president of the Russian Association of Military History and is now a member of the body’s scientific council.
He is Candidate of Historial Sciences and a Docent at the Department of Modern History of the History Department of St. Petersburg State University. His scientific and social activities were awarded the Legion of Honour (Chevalier) (2003). As of November 2019 he is a suspect in a murder investigation.

In 1979 he graduated from the Faculty of Physics and Mechanics of the Leningrad Polytechnic Institute with a degree in Physics and Engineering.
In 1984 he graduated with honors from the Faculty of History of the Leningrad State University, Department of Modern and Contemporary History.

In 1991, at the St. Petersburg State University, under the scientific supervision of a doctor of historical sciences, Professor VG Revunenkov defended his dissertation for the title of candidate of historical sciences on the subject “The body of officers of the French army under the old order and during the Revolution of 1789-1799 “(Specialty 07.00.03 – general history). The official opponents are Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor D.P. Pritzker and Candidate of Historical Sciences, researcher of the Leningrad branch of the Institute of History of the USSR S.N. Iskul Leading organization: Herzen State Pedagogical University of Russia.
He has worked as a technical adviser to European television broadcasters on films depicting the Napoleonic era, and he was made a knight of the Legion of Honour in France in 2003.
Since 2000 he has been a Professor in the Department of Modern History of the Department of History of the St. Petersburg State University.

He is the author of several works on the military history of Europe from the 17th century – the beginning of the 19th century. In 1999, he published an important study, Napoleon’s Army, which he translated into French in 2003. In 2006 he published the two-volume monograph Austerlitz. Napoleon, Russia and Europe. 1799-1805 a study of the facilities and the course of Napoleon’s first war against the anti-French coalition. He translated into Russian and complemented with extensive comments the work “Memories of the Napoleonic Wars 1802-1815” (French: Souvenirs Militaires. Officier d’artillerie aide de camp du maréchal Ney (1802-1815)) of the French officer Octave Levavasser, who participated in all military campaigns (except the Russian campaign of 1812) by Napoleon Bonaparte.

24-year-old Anastasia Yeshchenko was Sokolov’s former student, who graduated from St. Petersburg State University and a co-author of scientific works.
She had been in a relationship with the historian, 63, when he ‘accidentally killed her’ following an argument, according to the report which stated he had confessed to police.
Earlier reports had said the victim was a relative.
Multiple reports say the academic is in detention in hospital suffering from hypothermia.

Sokolov was arrested on Saturday, 9 Nov. 2019, on suspicion of murder after he was hauled out of the icy Moika River with a backpack containing a woman’s arms. He was reportedly drunk and fell in as he tried to dispose of body parts.

Sokolov has confessed to murdering his young lover and former student and dismembering her body in a grisly crime.
“He has admitted his guilt,” Sokolov’s lawyer Alexander Pochuev told AFP, adding he regretted what he had done and was now cooperating.
The young woman – identified by police sources as 24-year-old Anastasia Yeschenko – was a student of the professor, reported Russian media.

After disposing of the corpse he reportedly planned to commit suicide at the Peter and Paul Fortress, one of the former imperial capital’s most famous landmarks, dressed as Napoleon.
Pochuev suggested Sokolov may have been under stress or emotionally disturbed.
“He is an elderly person,” he said, adding he was being treated for hypothermia in a hospital.
