Nkosana Makate Wiki: Ari Khan (1977) is a South African who invented the “Please Call Me” concept. Nkosana Makate shared the concept with his employer Vodacom and they used it but he was not paid for it. He laid a charge against Vodacom and won the case against them after an 8-year battle with Vodacom.

Vodacom started the Please Call Me service in 2001. A 2014 judgment in the South Gauteng High Court supported Makate’s claim to having originated Please Call Me. It also rejected former CEO Alan Knott-Craig (Senior)’s claim that he had come up with the idea of the messaging service. High Court found against Makati, holding that Geissler had not had the authority to promise Makati such compensation and that the debt would have expired (in legal terms, been prescribed) within three years.

Makati appealed the case and later took it to the Constitutional Court. In April 2016 Justice Chris Jafta found in Makate’s favor and against Vodacom.

Nkosana Makate, the man credited with being the brains behind Vodacom’s “Please Call Me” message service. Said on Thursday he was grateful for the public support. He has received in his long-drawn-out multi-million rand civil claim against the mobile phone giant.

Some of the support has come in the form of the Please Call Me Movement. Which has the backing of some politicians and staged a protest at Vodacom’s headquarters in Midrand on Thursday, demanding that the company pay Nkosana Makate his due.

Nkosana Makate will head back to court as he wages a fresh legal battle against cellphone giant Vodacom. After its “ridiculous” compensation offer for his “Please Call Me”idea.

Sowetan has learned that Nkosana Makate, who has been embroiled in lengthy settlement negotiations. Which has rejected an offer determined by Vodacom’s group CEO Shameel Joosub to compensate him for the idea.

The drama unfolded yesterday with Vodacom’s lawyers threatening Nkosana Makate. ANC Gauteng leader Panyaza Lesufi and leader of the #pleasecallme movement with legal action should they fail to undertake in writing that they will refrain from making defamatory comments about the company.

Lesufi also stated that the planned march to Vodaworld in Midrand would not take place today after the company announced that it would shut down operations for the day.
