Convicted murderer involved in the 1986 murder of Anita Cobby

Murder of Anita Cobby

On the night of her death – February 2nd, 1986 – Anita Cobby was abducted by a group of five men while she was walking home from Blacktown train station.

She was pulled into a stolen Holden Kingswood and was sexually assaulted. Later she was dragged from the car, through a barbed wire fence and left in a paddock in Prospect, in Sydney’s west. Her throat had been cut.

Cobby’s body was found in the paddock two days later and her father had the task of identifying her.

Witnesses who saw the men drag Cobby into the car and a later tip-off led police to make arrests 22 days after her murder.

Leslie Murphy, then aged 22, his brothers Gary and Michael, then 28 and 33, Michael Murdoch, then 19, and John Travers, then 18, were found guilty of murdering Cobby.

In 1986, Detective Sergeant Anthony Waters told a court he and three other detectives took Gary Murphy to the scene of the crime the morning after his arrest on February 26.

Sergeant Waters told the court that, when another detective told Gary, “This is where the body was found,” Gary replied, “Is that all her blood? Shit, she must have bled.”

A media frenzy and public outcry led to calls for the reintroduction of the death penalty but the men were jailed for life.

When the five men were sentenced to life imprisonment in 1987, cheers and applause erupted from the public gallery of Sydney’s Central Criminal Court.

In his closing address, Justice Alan Maxwell said: “There is no doubt that, apart from the humiliation, degradation, and terror inflicted upon this young woman, she was the victim of a prolonged and sadistic physical and sexual assault.

“This was a calculated killing – done in cold blood.”

Justice Maxwell asked that the file of each man be marked “Never to be released”.

John Travers 2016 Audio Recordings

In 2016, audio of Travers was aired publicly on Channel Seven, in which he confessed that he, and the other men, had killed Cobby. The audio was captured by a Miss X, a woman who remains in witness protection, who wore the recording device when she visited Travers in jail.

Asked why he killed Cobby, Travers is heard saying: “We were all drunk and she’d f—ing seen all of us.”

He went on to say: “I said she’s got to be done … And they said go on Johnny do your bit, so I just cut her.”

Travers is then heard laughing before Miss X says: “Don’t laugh, it’s not funny.”
