Who is Cuqui Pacheco? Johnny Pacheco’s Wife; Biography, Wiki

Maria Elena “Cuqui” Pacheco is best known for being the wife of Juan Azarías Pacheco Knipping, known as Johnny Pacheco, a Dominican musician, arranger, bandleader, and record producer. He was a Salsa idol and co-founder of Fania Records, Eddie Palmieri’s bandmate and backer of music stars such as Rubén Bladés, Willie Colón, and Celia Cruz.

It is being reported that Pacheco died at Holy Name Medical Center in Teaneck, New Jersey, United States, aged 85, on February 15th, 2021.

Cuqui Pacheco was the one who announced his Husband’s Passing

“With great pain in my soul and an emptiness in my heart, I inform you that maestro Johnny Pacheco passed away this afternoon with great peace. A thousand thanks for all your prayers and all the love you always gave him,” said Cuqui in a statement published on the musician’s official Facebook page.

There isn’t too much information available about the couple’s relationship, but they have been married for a while now. Diario Libre reported that on Sunday, Cuqui had requested a prayer chain and privacy during this hard time.

Cuqui had said in a statement before his death, “God bless you all. The family of Maestro Johnny Pacheco requests a chain of prayer for his health, who in these days was admitted to an emergency hospital due to pneumonia. To all his fans, colleagues, and friends we ask you not to stop praying for his health. We ask for your privacy at this time. We will keep you informed.” Salsa announcer and ‘Senior Salsologist’, Eugenio Pérez confirmed the news as well and posted two lovely images of the late Johnny – one with Cuqui and another when the legend was younger.

Cuqui Pacheco Death & Cause

A resident of Fort Lee, New Jersey, Pacheco died at Holy Name Medical Center in Teaneck, New Jersey, United States, aged 85, on February 15th, 2021, after being hospitalized for complications stemming from pneumonia.

Fania Records tweeted that the musician was “the man most responsible for the genre of salsa music. He was a visionary and his music will live on eternally.”

In a post on his social media, Blades said that “Pacheco leaves us with an important musical legacy, represented by all the collaborations he made during his distinguished career.”

Pacheco was born March 25, 1935, in the Dominican Republic into a family of musicians.The family moved to New York in the 1940s, where he taught himself to play accordion, violin, saxophone and clarinet and studied percussion at Juilliard.

In 1954, he formed The Chuchulecos Boys with Palmieri on piano, Barry Rogers on trombone and other musicians who would gain renown in the salsa scene, such as Al Santiago, Mike Collazo and Ray Santos.
