On Monday, October 12, the Mayor of Anchorage admitted to having an “inappropriate messaging relationship” with a local television news anchor who brought bizarre and unsubstantiated accusations against him.
“I apologize to the people of Anchorage for a major misjudgment I made several years ago when I had a consensual and inappropriate messaging relationship with reporter Maria Athens,” Mayor Ethan Berkowitz said in a statement.

The host claimed the allegations came from “reliable sources” and said the story would air later that night. An investigation by Anchorage police and the FBI into the allegations found no criminal conduct, according to the Anchorage Daily News. Berkowitz criticized the initial claims as “defamatory” and “categorically false” in a statement Friday.
Later on Friday, Athens posted on its Facebook page a nude image purporting to be Berkowitz, along with the mayor’s opening statement.
