FedEx Indianapolis Mass Shooting Report

FedEx Indianapolis Mass Shooting Report

Amass shooting broke out at an Indianapolis, Indiana, FedEx facility near the city’s airport on Thursday, April 16, 2021. Authorities described the situation as an “active shooter” incident at one point on the scanner. There were reports of people hiding by conveyor belts and at least five people shot, possibly as many as eight.

At one point in the initial police dispatch audio, which you can listen to later in this article, dispatchers said the suspect was described as a “white male wearing a hat” or hoodie and carrying a rifle type weapon. CNN described a “mass casualty” incident at the facility on the southwest side of the city. Police later said the suspect had a .223 rifle.

Indianapolis police say eight people were killed and multiple others wounded at a FedEx facility on the city’s southwest side late Thursday. They say it appears the suspected gunman killed himself.

The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department says officers came upon an active shooter incident when they arrived.

They found the bodies of eight people. Several other victims were raced to hospitals, at least one in critical condition. Some others got to hospitals on their own.

IMPD spokesperson Genae Cook told reporters early Friday it appears the shooter took his own life, adding, “We don’t feel that there is an active threat to the community at this time.”

She called the shooting “very heartbreaking” and “a tragedy.”

Police asked anyone with family members who work at the facility who haven’t been able to contact them to go to a nearby Holiday Inn.

The facility is near the Indianapolis International Airport.

Dispatchers said early on that they thought at least five people were shot but then they kept finding more victims. Be aware that early scanner reports can be contradictory or even wrong. Authorities were also investigating whether there might be two shooters but later declared there was only one shooter, dead at the scene. Other reports say as many as eight people might be shot.

“We have an active shooter currently at FedEx. They’re reporting at least five people shot,” said a dispatcher. Authorities have not yet given an official accounting of what’s happened, including how many were shot and killed, suspect name or motive, or where the suspect is. Dispatch audio, though, indicated that the police thought the suspect was believed to be dead at the scene. This remains unconfirmed.

Worker’s husband rushed to scene

A man whose wife works in the facility told WTTV she texted him to say there was an active shooter there.

“She texted me to tell me there’s an active shooter and we communicated back and forth for a while. She’s since notified me she’s OK,” said Ian Johnson.

“After I communicated with her for a while, then it went silent for a while, so I came here just to see what was going on and she texted me I’m OK.”

Johnson said you never think something like this might happen, but it always can.

Victim shot in arm as she sat in car, uncle says

The uncle of one victim says she was shot in the upper left arm as she sat in her car in a parking lot at the FedEx facility.

“She’s fine. She’s in the hospital now,” Parminder Singh told WTTV.

“She called as I was asleep at home. She said there was a shooting in the FedEx. So we just drove from Brownsburg,” he said.

He said his niece did not know the gunman.

FedEx comments on “tragic shooting”

FedEx issued a statement early Friday saying it’s “aware of the tragic shooting at our FedEx Ground facility near the Indianapolis airport. Safety is our top priority, and our thoughts are with all those who are affected. We are working to gather more information and are cooperating with investigating authorities.”

Videos Emerged From the Scene

The Indiana State Police said I-70 is closed in both directions between I-465 and Ronald Regan Pkwy due to police activity in the area.

Rafael Sánchez, WRTV journalist, wrote on Twitter, “Initial details on mass casualty shooting at FedEx facility in Indy.” He said that the first 911 call came in at 11:07 p.m. on April 15, 2021, with people reporting someone shooting outside the building. There were then reports of shots in the building. He said there were multiple injuries, and people were hiding by conveyer belts inside.

Authorities were evacuating the building and searching people.
