Lillian Miles Lewis was the wife of John Lewis, an American politician and civil rights leader. He is the U.S. Representative for Georgia’s 5th congressional district, serving in his 17th term in the House, having served since 1987.
The iconic civil rights activist died at the age of 80, after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in December 2019. In 2012, after a long illness, he lost his wife Lillian Miles Lewis.
Lillian Miles Career
Lewis taught in Nigeria in 1960, and then AJC volunteered there for two more years before meeting John Lewis in 1967. They were at a party at Clayton’s New Year’s Eve home. He married MP in 1968.
Clayton said to AJC about pairing: “I thought he needed a partner like Lillian, and Lillian needed someone in such important areas. He was a sober-headed, flat-headed intellectual. ”
When her husband was a political activist, Lewis continued his career. He had a bachelor in social studies and an English student from California State College in Los Angeles. He holds a master’s degree in library science from the University of Southern California. From 1989 to 2003, AJC served as the foreign director of the Clark Atlanta University Research and Sponsor Programs Office.
Lillian Miles Died in 2012
According to WABE, New Year’s Eve died in 2012, the 45th anniversary of the date when John Lewis and John Lewis met. He had long-term health problems and was hospitalized before he died. Lillian was buried at South View Cemetery in Atlanta, Georgia. His body was in the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta.
Lillian’s cause of death was not shared with everyone when he died. In fact, Lewis never wanted her focus of her illness away from her husband’s job and activism. In January 2013, her close friend, Xernona Clayton, told AJC that Lillian’s illness did not want her husband to overshadow her business.
Clayton said: “He’d endure him a little bit about telling people he was sick. He did not want this to be the focus. He asked him to do his job. ”
WABE said Lewis’s husband was always a fierce supporter. At her funeral, Clayton said: “He went deep into everything he wanted to do. He gave his talent, energy, lawyer and ability to raise money to meet John’s needs. … Lillian was a show horse, not a show horse. ”
Although he did not share his specific cause of death when he died, Clayton explained that Lewis was sick for a long time and died at the age of 73 at Emory University Hospital.

Nearly eight years after Lillian Miles Lewis died, her husband John Lewis passed away at the age of 80 on July 17th, 2020. On December 29th, 2019, it was announced that Lewis was receiving treatment for stage IV pancreatic cancer.
