Leanza Cornett is the former Miss America who died on October 28 after she sustained head injuries. Cornett won Miss America in 1993. She was 21 years old when she won the competition. Cornett is survived by her two children, Kai Steines, 18, and Avery Steines, 16. Cornett was married to Mark Steines from 1995 until 2013.

Cornett’s death was announced on Leanza Cornett’s Love Circle Facebook page. In the post, “I’m here to let you know that Leanza has passed this afternoon. It’s loved. I don’t want to write too much right now; I’m heartbroken.” Cornett suffered a head injury on October 12th, according to an earlier post on that page. After removing his injuries, Cornett underwent emergency surgery. The exact circumstances surrounding Cornett’s injuries were not immediately made public.

In addition to her Miss America triumph, Cornett was a reporter for Entertainment Tonight for a time in 1995.


Cornett described herself on her Twitter page as “Mother, daughter, Christian woman, Activist, Foodie, former Miss America, Patriotic American, world traveler, music lover.” At the time of Cornett’s death, his Twitter page was set to private. He was the president of Cornett Entertainment, according to Cornett’s LinkedIn page. Cornett’s IMDb page explains that in addition to his time on the Entertainment Tonight program, he was also featured in CSI, Saved by the Bell: The New Class and Weeds.


In April 2006, according to the Florida Times-Union, Cornett was chosen as part of the hall of fame of Terry Parker High School in Jacksonville, Florida, where he graduated. Cornett was a native of Big Gap, Virginia, but grew up in the Jacksonville area.


While paying homage to Cornett on Twitter, Kate Shindle, her former beauty contest winner friend Kate Shindle, said, “It’s sad to hear about the loss of @ LeanzaCornett. A pioneer, an incredible talent, fighting for the better of the world, and I have the @MissAmerica title to HIV / AIDS. A person who takes time to share what he has learned when I want to use it in the counter war. #RIP, my friend. ”Cornett’s death was noted on the Miss America Organization’s Facebook page. Tribute partly says, “Leanza had a bright and beautiful soul, and her laughter was infectious. We know it is very important to many people, including you. ”


Prior to her Miss America victory in 1993, Cornett was named Miss National Sweetheart in 1991. A undated online profile of Cornett says that she started competing in beauty contests as a way to earn scholarship money for college.


A People Magazine article published in Cornett in October 2000 said that Cornett went to work for Entertainment Tonight after her Miss America victory. He was fired from the show in 1995, shortly after his wedding to Mark Steines. Steines would replace Cornett in the series.


US Weekly reported that Cornett and Steines were separated in January 2013. A source close to Steines told the magazine at the time: “Mark is trying to keep things as optimistic and positive as possible.”


In a separate report on the couple’s split, US Weekly reported that Steines and Cornett were married on the Hawaiian island of Kauai. Page Six reports that the family’s old home in Ojai, California, went on sale in the summer of 2015.


According to Brides.com, Steines remarried with children’s writer Julie Freyermuth in August 2016 in Los Angeles. In his statement on Cornett’s death, Steines said:


I share with you my ex-wife Leanza’s passing away to our two extraordinary sons, Kai and Avery. We will always remember the wonderful times he shared here on earth in a short time. It comforted me to know that Kai and Avery will forever be watching over the best guardian angel as they move on the path of life. I ask you to keep them, Leanza’s parents and family in your prayers.


In Cornett’s 2015 interview, the host said after listening to Regis Philbin that his first feeling was reading his name as the winner. One of Cornett’s other thoughts was:


I thought of the boyfriend who broke up with me and hoped he and his whole family would watch. I’m just overwhelmed. He was completely stunned. I have never been so shocked in my life.


Cornett said that her boyfriend broke up with her in her first year of college, but the couple later became friends. According to Cornett’s Facebook page, he studied communication arts at Jacksonville University and graduated in 1991. According to the Orlando Sentinel report, Cornett’s college enrollment created a minor issue with his eligibility for the Miss Winter Park competition in Florida. When the problem was raised during an episode of Larry King Live, Sentinel legendary host told “What’s wrong?” He quoted what he asked.
