Kieran Hayward Mother
His deep emotional bond with his mother Andrea scarcely weakened – despite his increasingly gangly frame and growing independence. Sons may shun maternal cuddles as they approach their teenage years but Kieran Hayward was an exception.
Kieran Hayward Crimes Story
Today, the Haywards are sharing their story to alert other parents to the county lines menace. They warn against presuming that such devastation only affects other families.
Kieran had secretly joined a large gang operating in Suffolk and Essex, selling drugs in a community center opposite the school during his lunch break. He was only 13 years old.
His parents, who knew nothing of his drug trafficking, thought that discipline could reconcile him and commit him to the army cadets. “But Kieran was quite dismissive,” said Mrs. Hayward. “He said we were not worried about anything, he just hang around with friends.”
The situation worsened quickly. Kieran was on cannabis when he was 14, and his horrified mother took him to the doctor for help.
“Kieran has admitted he used to smoke at leisure, but the family doctor was not worried,” she said. “He gave him leaflets about rehab, but Kieran was not interested.”
Now he was earning enough trade to buy designer clothes and sneakers, and told his parents they were cheap fakes or friend transfers. Kieran’s increasingly disturbed parents decided to try a fresh start in January 2017 by transferring him to a village school 11 km away.
But on his first day at Thurston Community College, Kieran was expelled for being found with drugs and a fishing knife. His mother recalled, “I got a phone call to say I had to come in right away when Kieran tried to sell cannabis to people.”
At first, new routine seemed to work and Kieran said he wanted to go back to school. The head refused, however. “He just gave up at this point,” his mother said. It was heartbreaking. They totally abandoned him.
Kieran said there was no way to pass exams, he would not be able to get qualifications or a job.
When Kieran was 16 years old, he experienced violence more akin to a grim television drama than the sleepy Bury St Edmunds.
In September 2017, social services were reintegrated when the then 15-year-old Kieran was missing for three days. The police arrested him for cannabis possession in the community property opposite the school.
His mother said, ‘One officer called me and said,’ I’ll bring Kieran back so you can see he’s fine, but he will not stay with you, he wants to go back to Newmarket. ‘ I had tears in my eyes and said he was still a kid, he was only 16.
“But the officer even took Kieran back to the train station so he could take the train to Newmarket.”
The police refused to reveal Kieran’s address and said it was not certain that Mrs. Hayward would go there.
When the property was searched two weeks later, her son was arrested for possession of a Class A knife, class A drugs with intent to supply and money laundering.
