A Nevada teen is dead after Justin Michael Mullis walked up to a McDonald’s restaurant off Interstate 80 in Elko, and opened fire in a drive-thru window, police say.

FOx 13 reported that 16-year-old Kylee Leniz was working in the showcase of the restaurant around 21:30. On Sunday night, a man identified as 24-year-old Justin Michael Mullis walked to the window and shot him. Leniz was taken to the Northeastern Nevada District Hospital and later declared dead.

According to the police, no link was found between the suspect and the victim. At this point the shot looks like a random attack.

“The investigation is ongoing, but the crime seems random and there is no known link between Mullis and 16-year-old Kylee Leniz of Elko,” police said.

Later, an acquaintance took Mullis to the police station after Mullis saw a surveillance photo of him on local news. The Elko Police Department arrested Mullis and charged him with open murder.

Elko Daily Free Press reported that a large number of people brought flowers and balloons and placed them on the corner of Idaho Street and Boyd Drive, next to the restaurant.

“With a heavy heart we lost one of our Elko employees and were deeply saddened by the tragedy that happened last night,” said Chris Kassity, owner-operator of McDonald. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the employee’s family during this extremely difficult period. We fully cooperate with local law enforcement agencies that continue to investigate this tragedy. ”

Elko High School, which Leniz attends, offers mental health support to students. Psychologists and social workers can be reached by contacting the school.

“The investigation is ongoing, but the crime seems random and there is no known link between Mullis and the victim,” police said.

During the day, people brought flowers and balloons to the restaurant on the corner of Idaho Street and Boyd Drive. The “Justice for Kylee” Facebook page was launched Monday and had over 500 members by evening.

“With a heavy heart we lost one of our Elko employees and were deeply saddened by the tragedy that happened last night,” said Chris Kassity, owner and operator of McDonald. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the employee’s family during this extremely difficult period. We fully cooperate with local law enforcement agencies that continue to investigate this tragedy. ”
