Cuomo tweeted: “Very sad to hear of Joyce Dinkins passing. Born in New York, she spent her time as First Lady with grace and purpose, dedicated to education and an advocate for literacy. My condolences to Mayor Dinkins, her children David and Donna, and all of their loved ones. ”
Lynda Hamilton said in a statement on behalf of the Dinkins family: “Joyce Burrows Dinkins, the youngest of two daughters of Daniel Burrows and Elaine Nelthrop Burrows, was born in 1930. Daniel Burrows was a prominent businessman and political figure in Harlem. Joyce was raised and educated in Harlem and graduated from George Washington High School. She then attended Howard University in Washington, DC, where she received a BA in Sociology in 1953.
“As First Lady of New York City, Joyce promoted education, health care, and the arts for children. She served as the honorary chair of the Mayor’s Task Force on Child Abuse, chair of “The First Day Back to School,” a multimedia services campaign, and honorary chair of New York City’s Week of the Child. But her main concern was always increasing the literacy of New York’s children.
Joyce B. Dinkins made a peaceful transition from this life, at home with her family, on October 11, 2020. A memorial service will be held sometime after the COVID crisis is over. While our city will miss this incredible human being who embodied grace, compassion and love, her family will strive to honor her legacy. ”
