Shallerhorn was booked with a count of first-degree murder of a police officer in the slaying of Martinus Mitchum, 38, jail records show. He also faces a count of armed robbery, though the records didn’t elaborate on exactly how that hold-up unfolded.
Police say Shallerhorn was trying to enter George Washington Carver High School’s playoff game at its home gymnasium against Warren Easton High when he got into an argument with a school staffer at about 6:30 p.m. Mitchum, a Tulane University police officer and 2nd City Court deputy constable moonlighting at the school to provide security, overheard the dispute, intervened and tried to escort the man off Carver’s campus at 3059 Higgins Blvd. in the Desire neighborhood.
Shallerhorn pulled a gun and shot Mitchum in the chest, authorities said. Paramedics took Mitchum to University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office deputies who were also at Carver arrested Shallerhorn and turned him over to police.
If convicted of first-degree murder of a police officer, Shallerhorn would receive life imprisonment or the death penalty.
Shallerhorn has previous brushes with the law. His only conviction as an adult in Jefferson or Orleans Parish was in 2013 when he pleaded guilty as a first-time offender to disturbing the peace. He was placed on 30 days probation, according to Orleans Parish Criminal District Court records.
He was booked with of indecent behavior with a juvenile in New Orleans on Aug. 10, 2019, but prosecutors refused the case three months later, records show.
Jefferson Parish prosecutors charged him with obscenity Dec. 6, 2019, and he was wanted for failing to show up for his arraignment June 23, according to records.
Attempts to determine whether Shallerhorn has retained an attorney Friday weren’t immediately successful.
Police said Shallerhorn also had robbed a medallion chain from a 39-year-old man sitting in a car in Carver’s parking lot on Friday evening. Shallerhorn allegedly approached that victim while brandishing a gun, police said.
Investigators jailed Shallerhorn on counts of first-degree murder of a police officer and armed robbery. He would face life imprisonment or the death penalty if convicted of murdering a police officer.
Shallerhorn’s bail had not been set as of Saturday morning.
