Jasmine Melendez was a 15-year-old girl from Midland, Texas, who died after she was beaten and sexually assaulted on Tuesday, her family said. NewsWest9 reported that family members said Melendez was “sexually assaulted and beaten” on Tuesday and flown to a hospital in Dallas where she later died.

CBS7 first reported that Melendez was found “thrown in a courtyard,” according to family members, and suffered a major brain injury and had fluid in his brain. The outlet also reported that the teenager had a heart attack and died in hospital. Authorities did not reveal much information about the tragic incident, and no statements were made about the suspects.

Midland officials made a statement Thursday saying that the Midland Police Department is investigating a case involving a child involved, but did not provide any further information. The statement provided to CBS7 says: “The Midland Fire Department responded to a medical aid call on October 20, 2020, and asked for assistance from the Midland Police Department, which included a child, due to the nature of the call. MPD has responded and the investigation is ongoing. ”


A spokesman for the Midland Police Department told NewsWest9: “To the extent that there is a criminal investigation involving sexual assault on a child, the City cannot interpret or verify any information.” Heavy also reached out to MPD for more information but didn’t get a prompt response.

The Midland Independent School District spoke about the situation at a press conference Thursday, but did not provide additional details about Melendez’s death. About 37 minutes after the press conference, a question was asked about “a student allegedly attacked near [Midland High School] was sent to Metroplex and died”.


District chief of staff Dr. Katie Atkins replied: “I don’t know more about this unfortunate situation, the absolutely tragic situation, our hearts and our sympathy definitely with that family. I currently have no other information to share with this group. ”

NewsWest9 reports that Melendez is passionate about baseball and is well known at the Midland United Girls Softball (MUGS) complex, where he spent a lot of time. Those who knew him called him “sweet and hardworking” to his debut. Jennifer Evans, one of the former baseball coaches, said she’s a star athlete and an even better person.


He was really compassionate, he would lift anyone you knew what I mean, it was encouraging. People beckoned for their feet because it was so fast. He was a great friend, even those who needed help, guidance, or anything else he could do to help them. His smile brightened the room, illuminated the space.


The debut reported that Thursday night’s games started with a minute of silence for Melendez, and the girls wrote the number 12 on their cheeks. A video posted on Twitter showed the emotional moment that teammates carried their jersey around the bases:

Rick Maddox of the MUGS Softball Organization told NewsWest9: “It deserves the honor of what we did tonight and it deserves it for everyone but I hate that we have to do it, you know that’s why it’s gone. . ”


Midland High School’s softball team announced that they will open two accounts on Facebook, one to support the family with medical and funeral expenses, and the other to create a “scholarship account” that will honor Jasmine’s dedication to the program. . ”


The family also created a GoFundMe page to help Melendez’s mother raise money for “medical bills, funeral expenses and other costs incurred.”


CBS7’s Shane Battis posted on Facebook Sunday about a barbecue and car show in Midland that would help raise funeral expenses for the family. A march is planned for Melendez on Friday, October 23rd. The march will start at 18:00. It will end at the courthouse and at the Midland Police Department.
