James Scurlock is a 22-year-old man who was shot to death late Saturday said he wants to see justice for his son and urged protesters not to commit violence in his son’s name.

While police have not named Gardner, social media is lit up with accusations that Gardner shot 22-year-old James Scurlock outside in front of the Hive Bar. In the video of the shooting circulating online, the footage is shaky but it shows a confrontation between two men, one white and one black on the sidewalk.
There are many people standing around and two people can be heard saying, “This N** got a gun!,” repeatedly. One says, “It’s not worth it N***— he’s got a gun!”
Police said in a report that officers heard gunshots around 11 p.m. in the area of 12th and Harney streets. Upon officers’ arrival to the scene of 1207 Harney Street, they found 22-year-old James Scurlock suffering from a gunshot wound. He was taken to the Nebraska Medical Center where he died.
Police Chief Todd Schmaderer said during a press conference Sunday that an individual connected to the shooting death of 22-year-old James Scurlock was detained and is still in police custody. No determination had yet been made in regards to charges, he said.
“Any charging decision on that front will come from the county attorney’s office,” Schmaderer said. “And he tells me that will be accompanied by a press conference.”
Who is Suspect Killer Jake Gardner?
Gardner is a Marine veteran, according to his Facebook page. He served as a non-commissioned in the infantry from 2000 to 2005. He is an Omaha native, graduating from Millard West High School in 2000. He later studied at Metropolitan Community College and Humboldt State University, he said on Facebook.
Gardner has owned The Gatsby, dance and night club, in Omaha since November 2019, according to his Facebook profile. He has owned The Hive Rock Club and Art Gallery since 2011. His third business, Surreal Cereal Bar, was also opened in November 2019. He is also the founder and CEO of AmeriGreen LLC and EON Hospitality Management.
At 10:15 p.m. Saturday, not long before Spurlock was shot and killed, Gardner posted on Facebook, “Just when you think “ what else could 2020 throw at me?” Then you have to pull 48 hours of military style firewatch 🤷♂️ 🔥 👀”
Jake Gardner Shot to Death James Scurlock
Authorities would not release the alleged shooter’s name, but The World-Herald confirmed that it was Jake Gardner. Gardner owns the Hive and The Gatsby, two popular bars near the shooting scene.
Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmaderer said “the shooter” was still “in police custody” Sunday. Gardner was not jailed, Douglas County officials said. He did not return calls or text messages seeking comment.
Hours before the Saturday night shooting, Gardner wrote on Facebook about protecting his business.
Around midnight Saturday night, Omaha Police tweeted that someone had been shot at 12th and Harney, and the suspect “was at large.” Not long after they updated that the “suspect was in custody.” Gardner’s name was confirmed by the Omaha World-Herald.
Schmaderer did not identify the person in custody, but said that the individual was not released at any point. Police are not looking for any other suspects.
Several videos of the shooting circulated around social media, where you can hear two gunshots. Police are collecting those videos and urging anyone who has videos to share them with homicide detectives. They want people to call 402-444-5656.
Officials confirmed no officers were involved in the shooting.
City councilman Ben Gray hopes the county attorney makes a decision soon.
“This is one of those tragedies that should have never happened,” Gray said.
