The New Jersey Herald newspaper reported that a soldier had been detained and charged with the murder of CPL Hayden Harris, a Fort Drum soldier who went missing about two days ago and was recently found dead.
Speaking to Sussex County NJ Deputy Attorney General Gregory Mueller, Herald reporter Lori Comstock learned that the suspect to be charged with murder was 23-year-old Jamaal Mellish, one of Harris’ soldiers.
Mueller told Herald that prosecutors believed Mellish “kidnapped” Harris when they met in Watertown for some sort of vehicle change, and the meeting escalated.
Army officials said CPL Harris was last seen between Thursday 17 December and Friday 18 December.
According to the Herald’s report, Mellish drove Harris to the New York City area and then to New Jersey. Mueller said Harris was shot dead and found in a wooded area in a dead end street on Ross Road in Byram Township.
Mueller said Herald Mellish was detained in Watertown. He will be extradited to NJ Sussex County and is expected to be charged with murder and possession of weapons.

CPL Harris was a native of Guys, Tennessee and joined the Army in March 2019. He was an infantryman from the 1st Squadron of the 2nd Brigade, 89th Cavalry Regiment.
On Sunday, Brigadier General Brett Funck, Deputy Senior Commander of the 10th Mountain Division, said, “We are destroyed. It was well known here that Corporal Harris was a great Soldier, and as we share our grief with his friends and Family, I hear over and over that he too – and most importantly – is a truly wonderful, compassionate person. It is a great loss for this Division and our nation that he loved death. ”
Upon his death, Harris was promoted to the rank of Corporal and was awarded the Army Commendation Medal.
Syracuse.com, 20-year-old Cpl. Hayden Harris was found hiding in a rural area on Ross Road in Byram Township in Sussex County, New Jersey, on Monday. While doing their job, the Byram Township fire department found blood, shoes, and paper, and contacted officials who found Harris in a remote area.
Police arrested a suspect who was a fellow soldier in New York. The authorities are currently making plans to return him to New Jersey. According to the report of 7News, it was determined that the suspect was 23-year-old Jamaal Mellish.
The suspect allegedly drove Harris to the New York City area, then to New Jersey, after Harris left his job for a vehicle replacement.
“Criminal charges involving murder and gun charges will soon be brought to a judge in New Jersey,” said Gregory Mueller, Deputy Attorney General at Sussex County.
Harris was from Guys, Tennessee and joined the army in 2019, according to Brigadier General Brett Funck, the deputy commander for Fort Drum and the 10th Mountain Division.
“It was well known here that Corporal Harris was a great soldier,” Funck said. “As I share our pain with his friends and family, I have repeatedly heard that he too – and most importantly – is a truly wonderful, compassionate person. It is this division and a great loss for our nation that he loved death. ”
Harris graduated from the Air Raid School in 2019 and survived by his parents and sister. During his time in the army, he won many awards and badges.
