Who is Helmut Jahn?

Helmut Jahn is a German-American architect known in part for his world-renowned work in Chicago. He died Saturday, May 8, 2021, from injuries he suffered in a bicycling accident in Campton Hills. Campton Hills Police investigated the cause of Jahn’s crash and confirmed his death to the Chicago Tribune and other news outlets. He was pronounced dead at the scene in Campton Hills, a village near St. Charles, a western Chicago suburb in Kane County.

Born January 4, 1940, Jahn was raised in Zirndorf near Nuremberg, Germany, in 1940. He spent his childhood watching the reconstruction of the city, which had been largely destroyed by Allied bombing campaigns. After attending the Technical University of Munich from 1960 to 1965, he worked with Peter C. von Seidlein for a year. In 1966, he emigrated to Chicago to further study architecture at the Illinois Institute of Technology.

He eventually left school without earning his degree.

Jahn was interested in yachting in the 1990s and owned at least three yachts named Flash Gordon.

In 1995, Jahn’s Flash Gordon 2 won the annual Chicago to Mackinac Race, the oldest freshwater yacht race in the world.

In 1998, Jahn invited his fellow Vietnam War veteran, George Henry, to race with him in the Waterbury Channel Open. In 1997, Flash Gordon 3 won the Admiral’s Cup. In 2017 Flash Gordon 6 team captured its third straight North American Championship. Jahn joined Charles Francis Murphy’s architecture firm, C. F. He is known for designs such as the Sony Center on the Potsdamer Platz in Berlin, Germany; the Messeturm in Frankfurt, Germany; the One Liberty Place in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; and the Suvarnabhumi Airport, an international airport in Bangkok, Thailand.

Jahn was riding his bicycle in Campton Hills, near St. Charles at about 3:30 p.m. Saturday, May 8, when he was hit by two vehicles, Campton Hills police said in a news release summarized by the Chicago Tribune and other news outlets.

Multiple witnesses told police Jahn did not stop at a stop sign as he approached an intersection, for unknown reasons.

“That’s what multiple witnesses relayed,” Campton Hills Officer Scott Coryell told the Chicago Tribune. “For an unknown reason, he failed to stop.”

He was riding the bicycle northeast on Old Lafox Road, approaching its T-shaped intersection with Burlington Road when he was hit in the village, a western Chicago suburb in Kane County. Campton Hills Police Chief Steven Millar told news outlets a silver Chevrolet Trailblazer SUV headed southeast on Burlington Road struck Jahn, and then a second vehicle, a silver Hyundai Sonata headed northwest on Burlington Road, struck him also.

“He was hit by the Trailblazer going south(east) and ended up in the north(west) lane where the Sonata hit him,” Coryell told the Chicago Tribune.

The driver of the Trailblazer and a female passenger in the SUV were not injured, officials said. The driver of the Sonata, who was an Elburn woman, was taken to Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital in Geneva for treatment of injuries that were not considered to be life-threatening.

The Trailblazer driver and his female passenger were not injured.

Helmut’s wife is Deborah Ann Lampe. His family includes his son and grandchildren. He and his wife Deborah gave birth to their son Evan in 1978. Also, Helmut was a grandfather to the two daughters of Evan. The two married in December 1970. Jahn’s wife Deborah is an interior designer.

They met during their duty as Deborah was working with Murphy. Both of them were on the reconstruction project of McCormick Place.

Jahn’s wife has her own interior design business after she left Murphy/Jahn.
