Gareth Richards Wiki – Gareth Richards Biography

The wife of a police officer who was jailed for posing as a teenager online for asking young girls for sex said she was ‘naive’ to believe that her husband didn’t know how old his victims were.

Gareth Richards, 36-year-old Humberside Policeman from Brocklesby in northern Lincolnshire, was jailed for five years and four months at the Hull Crown Court on Friday for his crimes.

The court heard how Richards acted like a teenager between September 2016 and March 2017 in order to share sexually explicit messages with girls aged 14 and 15 and even have them post their nude photos.

During the 90-minute conviction hearing, the court heard that Richards had no previous convictions and published a character reference to him in the defense of his wife, who “supported and stood by him”.

But Lucie Richards, speaking after her husband was put in jail, said that she only included the ‘short’ character reference after being ‘manipulated’ by Richards.

He had initially told investigators that the court’s online profile images showed their youth ‘clearly’ and although some usernames included ‘2001’ or ’01’, he did not know how old the girls were. ‘indicates the years of birth.

Prosecutor attorney Gerald Hendron also told the court in a message to one of Richards ‘victims:’ Are you really 15? It doesn’t matter if you are.

But since he was charged, he had said in messages to his wife: “I have no way of knowing that people are underage!”

Richards’ 11 crimes of inciting women under the age of 16 to engage in sexual activity on the internet would begin in October, the day before the trial of two inappropriate images and the day before an indictment begins.

Now his wife and mother of a young daughter made it clear that he neither supported nor stood by him.

The character reference was not based on anything else, but on what I knew, what he told me. I did not have any official information, ‘he said.

I kept asking him for the accusations and I had to do my own pickaxe – it was never too specific and I just trusted him. I feel stupid.

“Gareth lied to me throughout the process and I was so naive.”

Richards’ defense at his conviction added ‘context’ to the situation in which he committed the crime; This was that at the time his relationship was struggling ‘financially and emotionally’, causing significant stress and strain for him.

His wife said, ‘Gareth doesn’t take responsibility for what he did, he thinks it’s my fault because I don’t love enough.

“I didn’t know the extent of his actions – I wouldn’t have stood by him if I had.”

Richards will have to serve half his sentence behind bars before being released on his license, and he will have to register as a sex offender.

A spokesperson for Humberside Police, who dismissed one of its top detectives with racism on Friday, confirmed that the issue will be forwarded to the Occupational Standards Department, now the court proceedings are concluded.
