Francisco Gilberto Hernandezvargas was a Fort Hood soldier who was found dead in a Texas lake over the weekend, marking the fifth soldier from Fort Hood found deceased in less than three months.
According to a Fort Hood Press Center release, Spc. Francisco Gilberto Hernandezvargas, 24, of New York, died Sunday during a boating incident at the Stillhouse Hollow Lake. Witnesses reportedly said the victim went underwater while on an innertube and never came back up.
“Well, we were out in the water and happened to notice a lot of emergency service vehicles, saw people out with binoculars out on the lake,” Karen Lange, a witness, told Fox WFXR.
Spc. Hernandez’s home of record is listed as Woodside New York. Fort Hood says he joined the U.S. Army in May of 2017 as an Automatic Rifleman. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division in December 2017.
Hernandez’s awards and decorations include the National Defense Service Medal, Korean Defense Service Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, Overseas Service Ribbon and the Army Service Ribbon.
“The Black Knight family is heartbroken by the loss of Specialist Francisco Hernandezvargas. Our hearts go out to his family and friends during this difficult time,” said Lt. Col. Neil Armstrong, commander of 1st Bn. 5th Cav. Regt.
Armstrong said Hernandezvargas also served abroad in Romania and Korea.
Before the death of Hernandezvargas, Fort Hood soldier Vanessa Guillen, who was buried in three shallow graves near Leon Hood, died on June 30. His body was torn and charred.
Suspect Cecily Aguilar is currently behind bars in connection with Guillen’s death. Fort Hood soldier Aaron Robinson, another suspect of Guillen’s death, shot himself in the head while being tracked by police after learning authorities discovered his remains.
On May 18. Brandon Rosecrans, 27, was found dead in the Harker Hills, about 15 km from Fort Hood. He was shot dead and left next to a burnt Jeep Renegade. There are no suspects at the Harker Heights Police Department, but we continue to investigate the soldier’s death as a murder.
On June 19, Fort Hood soldier Gregory Morales was found dead in an area less than 16 km from Fort Hood in Killeen, Texas. His clothes were found to be fragmented and scattered throughout the region. No suspects have yet been named for Morales’ death, but officials said the foul game was involved.
On July 21, 26-year-old Pvt. Mejhor Morta was also found dead in Stillhouse Hollow Lake. The sheriff department said in a news release that the front autopsy might have been Morta strangled. However, the investigation continues.
An autopsy on Hernandezvargas is planned to determine the cause of death of the Dallas County Health Inspectors Office, but researchers believe it was a boat accident. Detectives are currently investigating the events that led to the death of the soldier during the weekend.
