The husband and son of U.S. District Judge Esther Salas were shot around 5 p.m. Sunday in their home by a suspect possibly dressed like a delivery driver, multiple media outlets reported.

Initial reports indicate the couple’s son, 20-year-old Daniel Anderl, has died, and Salas’ husband, Mark Anderl, is in critical but stable condition following surgery at Robert Wood Johnson Hospital, the New Jersey Globe reported.

The elder Anderl, 63, is a criminal defense attorney and former assistant Essex County prosecutor.

According to the Globe, the shooter was dressed like a delivery driver, and Salas, who was in the basement at the time of the attack, is unharmed.

Federal judge Esther Salas Not Injured in Shooting

US District Judge Esther Salas was not injured in the shooting investigated by the FBI, US Marshals, and local authorities.

The armed force came to Salas’s home in North Brunswick, N.J. and said that she was wearing a dress identified by the police as FedEx uniforms. Both the defense attorney 63, Mark Anderl, and ex-Essex County deputy prosecutor and 20-year-old Daniel Anderl were shot by the attacker.

According to the Associated Press, Salas’s son died and her husband was hospitalized for surgery. His condition was uncertain.

Salas, 51, was the first Spanish woman in New Jersey to serve as a US district judge. President Barack Obama nominated him for office in 2010 and was approved by the Senate in 2011. Salas previously served as a magistrate at the US New Jersey District Court.

Sen. Robert Menendez (D-N.J.) appealed for a quick arrest in the Sunday shooting.

“I know Judge Salas and her husband well and was proud to recommend her to President Obama for nomination to New Jersey’s federal bench,” Menendez said in a statement. “My prayers are with Judge Salas and her family, and that those responsible for this horrendous act are swiftly apprehended and brought to justice.”
