Erramatti Mangayamma is an Indian woman who has been described to be the world’s oldest new mum Erramatti Mangayamma gave birth to two healthy baby girls on Thursday morning with her husband of 57 years, Raja Rao, 82, by her side.

The husband of a woman aged 73 who is thought to have become the world’s oldest mother after giving birth to twin girls in what doctor’s described as a ‘medical miracle’ suffered a stroke just a day after his daughters were born.

Mangayamma was inspired to try for a baby after a neighbour conceived at the age of 55.

Fertility Process;

The doctors began the process in November – December. The process was successful in the first cycle itself. She conceived in January. During assessing the progress inside the womb,
doctors found that Mangayamma was carrying twins.


“I thought about taking help of IVF procedure after a neighbour conceived at the age of 55,” she stated.

During the whole nine months of her pregnancy, Mangayamma remained in the hospital being monitored by multiple specialists including a gynaecologist, cardiologist, pulmonologist, nutritionist and other doctors. Dr Umashankar of Ahalya IVF and nursing home in Guntur city added that the treatment was a “challenge”.


On Thursday (September 5, 2019) The babies were delivered prematurely by caesarean section and weighed 3.5 lbs (1.6kg) each. Hospital head Dr Sanakkayala Umasankar announced that the mother and her two baby girls are doing well. It’s reported the IVF clinic in the city of Guntur paid for most of the procedure on the basis it would be a great historic achievement.

Mangayamma said: “I cannot express my feeling in words. These babies complete me. My six-decade-long wait has finally come to an end. Now, no one calls me infertile anymore.


Mangayamma will not be able to breastfeed her babies as her body has stopped producing milk. The babies will be fed with milk obtained from the milk bank.

“I don’t think she will have any major health issues in the post-delivery period.”

Record Holder(Oldest New Mum);

She went through menopause 30 years ago and is believed to have overtaken the current record holder for the oldest new mum, previously held by Maria del Carmen Bousada de Lara. She now waits for the fond call ” Amma”.

Erramatti Mangayamma, 74, who recently delivered two healthy babies via caesarean section, was placed in the ICU a short time later, though her exact medical condition remains unclear, according to The Sun.
