Austin police confirmed that one person died in the mass stabbing attack, saying, “Update to an incident in 500 Block of Congress Ave: One person is confirmed deceased.” The frightening attack occurred in the early morning hours of January 3, 2019, and police described it as random. The deceased victim was earlier named by friends as Johnathan Aguilar, who worked as a kitchen manager at Freebirds.

At a press conference, the Austin police sergeant. David Daniels said that, at 7:49 a.m. On January 3, 2020, officers were called to the Bennu cafeteria for a disturbance between the suspect and a client in a cafeteria. “The disturbance intensified and customers in the cafeteria intervened and detained the suspect in question.” The first incident in the cafeteria was not a stabbing.
Police were heading to the scene when the suspect “broke away and ran to the Freebirds store …,” Daniels said. The police chased him on foot. The officer lost sight of him. Then, the police received calls from Freebirds in reference to a stabbing. Once they entered, they located two victims who had been stabbed.
In a written press release, the police gave this account: “On Friday, January 3, 2020, at approximately 7:49 am, APD agents responded to a call from suspects at the Bennu cafeteria located at 515 S. Congress Ave, Suite # 108) Upon arrival, two customers from the cafeteria were trying to stop the suspect, a white man in his 20s, who had assaulted another client for no apparent reason. During the fight to arrest the suspect, the suspect was able to break free and fled the business. ”
The statement continued: “At approximately 8:11 am, another call entered 911 informing that the suspect who fled the cafeteria had fled to the Freebirds World Burrito restaurant located in Suite # 101. He received another call from a Freebirds employee reporting that he and a co-worker had been stabbed by the suspect. ”

Woodburn has a criminal record in Travis and Harris counties. According to KXAN-TV, in September 2019, he was arrested and charged with stealing a fire station, allegedly “stealing a radio from the Austin Fire Department and a firefighter’s shoes.”
