Dr. Vuyo Mahlati is best known for being the president of Afasa (the African Farmers Association of South Africa) and owner of a wool processing plant in the Eastern Cape. It is reported that he died on the morning of Tuesday October 13 at the age of 55.
He was passionate about women’s issues and leadership development. IWF South Africa was founded 19 years ago when its sponsor, Ms. Zanele Mbeki, together with a group of women leaders, established a South African chapter of the IWF. Vuyo was determined to work with her forum sisters to make it a success, staying true to the forum’s mission throughout her life. Vuyo was an inspiring and unifying force, and her impact on the forum will be felt for years to come.

Dan Kriek, a former chairman of Agri SA who was also part of the Ramaphosa panel, says he will remember Mahlathi as a strong woman whose power was undeniable in her fight for the redistribution of the land.
“She didn’t take any foolishness. She had a tremendous work ethic and was courageous in her work toward developing new black farmers. I hear the news of her death with great sadness and will be deeply missed,” says Kriek.
The executive director of the Chamber of Agricultural Business (Agbiz), Dr. John Purchase, says that Mahlathi left a great impression and that her absence will be very painful.
“We knew her well. This was not what I expected to hear this morning. It is a huge loss for the agricultural sector. She was a leader at the forefront of a very specific constituency that filled agricultural space. She will be missed. ”
