Who is Dominic McKay? Scottish Rugby, Biography, Wiki

A big breaking story can often be both surprising and unsurprising in equal measure.

And that’s certainly the case with Peter Lawwell ‘s storied 17-year stay as Celtic’s chief executive coming to an end on Friday as he announced his retirement.

There has been a widespread belief in recent years that the 61-year-old would exit Parkhead sooner rather than later but an element of surprise still registers when it is officially announced.

But what comes next is of great interest to Celtic supporters with a section of them calling for Lawwell to leave his post since the 2-0 Betfred Cup exit at the hands of Ross County.

A run of 29 trophies under his watch is a remarkable achievement but there’s also been a tangible sense that the Hoops fanbase are craving something fresh amid their flagging 10 In A Row bid.

And Celtic have wasted no time in announcing his successor as Scottish Rugby chief operating officer Dominic McKay will be the man who take the reins at the end of the season.

But what do we know about the next man up?

Record Sport profiles McKay ahead of his big switch to Parkhead in the summer.

His background

First and foremost, McKay is a communications specialist who spent time with big companies such as Greenspace and Chivas Brothers before joining Scottish Rugby back in 2008 as their director of communications. He has enjoyed 13 years in Edinburgh and has been in his current role as COO since 2015.

McKay enjoyed a varied career before heading into the world of comms and even served as a yacht skipper for Atlantic Ocean sailing back in 2001.

His reputation

McKay is widely respected withing Scottish sport and SRU chairman John Jeffrey’s glowing tribute upon the announcement of his departure shows how highly regarded he is at Murrayfield and within the sport itself.

Jeffrey said: “I’d like to congratulate Dom on his new role. He has been instrumental in making Scottish Rugby a more attractive and viable commercial partner for a wide portfolio of sponsors and supporters, which in turn has helped us to increase investment across the game at all levels.

“Dominic has also worked to develop our positive relationship with the Scottish Government, which has been increasingly important during the pandemic.”

He has also been at the forefront of pushing for fans to be able to return to rugby and will now surely do so for Celtic.

His own words

McKay has forged a reputation as a forward thinker who specialises in fan engagement and making the product on the field one that both supporters and sponsors return to in equal measure.

That ability to operate outside the box has never been more crucial with teams across the globe facing fresh challenges to generate income amid a pandemic that has changed everything.

McKay sat down with the Scotsman in 2017 and one answer in particular certainly resonates amid the current climate.

He said: “Ultimately, we’re a sports business funded by entertainment, and that entertainment is around making sure we put on a good event every time a rugby game takes place, but we’re also in the market constantly to try and acquire major events into BT Murrayfield.

“We’re about trying to get content into our stadium – there are a lot of transferable skills between the marketing of a fast-moving consumer brand in a whisky sense as there is in a sporting sense.”

His remit

It looks highly likely that Celtic will not be enjoying the 10 In A Row title party that they dreamed of but McKay will likely have something to build on during his first summer in charge.

Celtic, if they can finish second, will earn a place in Champions League qualifying in the non champions section.

They have made heavy weather qualifying for the world’s most prestigious club tournament over the past three years but rediscovering the continental touch would be a huge response in the wake of a campaign to forget.

McKay almost certainly faces a summer of upheaval in terms of the playing staff with a host of players such as Odsonne Edouard, Kris Ajer, Ryan Christie and Olivier Ntcham being targeted by clubs in England and further afield.

And what about Neil Lennon’s future? Fans have waited patiently on updates of his January review with Celtic currently 23 points behind Rangers in the Premiership.

Plenty for McKay to ponder.
