According to CBS Chicago, the corpse of vice-president Deon Boyd was found in the Homen Square Detention Center of the Chicago Police Department, a detention block where allegations of abuse have been inflamed for years. The site has been the subject of journalistic investigations, federal lawsuits and recent protests.
Chicago-Sun Times reported that Boyd had shot himself. According to WGN’s sources, they believe he killed himself on Monday night and his secretary found him at 9am on Tuesday morning.
In a few hours, dozens of law enforcement officers were created at the motor parade to take the body of the 57-year-old child to the medical doctor’s office.
Supt. David Brown explained that the officer committed suicide at the Chicago Police Department on Tuesday, “There is no way to convey or express the magnitude of this loss. We were shocked. And as this is lost and deeply felt, many colleagues and friends whose Assistant Assistant Boyd has worked and mentored throughout his career will change forever. ”
The causes of Boyd’s suicide are not clear, but Brown stressed the tension the police feel every day, “especially at a time of intense stress. Daily life may seem insurmountable for everyone from time to time. For the police officers, the risks increase even more because of the tireless work they do to protect others. ”
According to a 2019 article at the Addiction Center, the Chicago Police Department had a “police suicide epidemic” last year. Chicago’s police suicide rate was 60% higher than the national law enforcement average. ”
“Boyd, the second officer who died of suicide this year, and 10 officers, CPD, including Deputy Chief Dion Boyd, have died of suicide since 2018,” said WGN.
Blue Help, an organization supporting law enforcement families who died due to suicide, reported that in 2020, 98 officers have taken their own lives in the US so far. This figure was 228 in 2019.
Boyd’s experience with SMG is to serve as the 2nd (Wentworth) Area Commander. He also served as a Field Lieutenant in the 5th (Calumet) District, as a Sergeant in the Special Victims of the Interior and District Center, according to a CPD press release announcing the July promotion.
Boyd earned a master’s degree in business administration from Saint Xavier University and went to the Senior Management Institute hosted by the Boston University Police Executive Research Forum.
After 30 years of law enforcement, Boyd struggled with the last loss of Officer Samuel Jimenez, one of his officers, while managing the Wentworth District.
Jimenez was killed by an armed person in a Bronzeville hospital in 2018. Jiminez was only 18 months before being killed in a clash with a man who shot and killed his ex-fiance, who went to Mercy Hosptial in Chicago, according to the Officer Down Memorial.
Each day, #police officers say goodbye to their loved ones & go to work. The job can be dangerous. But they go to work. They serve our communities. Some, like Officer Samuel Jiminez of @Chicago_Police, make the ultimate sacrifice. Thank an Officer today. #OfficerDown pic.twitter.com/0DKrjPE6H0
