Dick Trachok is known mostly for his time at Nevada, where he was a standout player (his No. 21 is retired), a coach (he went 40-48-3 in 10 seasons) and athletic director (he hired Chris Ault as Nevada’s head football coach), but he also was Reno High’s football coach for 10 seasons (1949-58) and won six state titles, including four in a row from 1949-52.

Dick Trachok never had to work a day in his life. It was a nearly perfect existence for a football star, coach and athletic director who came from a small mining town in Pennsylvania to become a beloved Nevada icon.

Trachok died on Sunday. He was 94 years old.

Career

He often joked, he loved his job so much, he never felt like a job.

“He was very lucky that he didn’t feel like he was working,” his son Rick Trachok said on Sunday. “Enroll me in this kind of life.”

Trachok said his father has been in the hospital for the past week, but has been active for the past few months. He died in his daughter’s home. An athletic director in Nevada was emeritust and still had an office on campus and checked it almost daily. Trachok frequently visited Wolf Pack games in the last basketball season

Dick Trachok was the athletic director of Nevada between 1969-86.
Her health began to deteriorate in the past few months and she had heart problems, but still spoke passionately about sports.

“He was loved by everyone,” said his son.

Failed health news came to see him, including Chris Ault, who was hired by Trachok to play football and was later hired as head coach at the age of 29.

He just sat a few hours before he died with Ault Trachok.

“We had great stories. He was sharper than a conflict, as usual. ” Ault, who continued to be the athletic director of Nevada in 1986.
