Derrick Cooper, A Georgia man is dead after police say he went to his wife’s house and attempted to break in following his jail release.
Fox 5 reports that 52-year-old Derrick Cooper was previously arrested following a domestic dispute incident with his wife. A judge subsequently approved a restraining order against him and warned him to have no contact with his wife, as part of his bond agreement.
Cooper was out of jail on bail when he allegedly drove from Acworth to Pickens County, where his wife and children live. Pickens County agents found Cooper in his wife’s backyard about 11 a.m. Saturday after a 911 call.
According to police, Cooper’s wife, children and one other person were hiding inside the house while the suspect was in the backyard. When officers ordered Cooper to surrender, he reportedly pulled out a gun and began firing. He then tried to break into his wife’s house, prompting officers to return fire.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation determined that officers provided medical assistance until paramedics arrived. Cooper later passed away at a local hospital.
The GBI continues to investigate the incident. Once completed, the investigation will be turned over to the Appalachian Judicial Circuit District Attorney for final review.
