Tyler grew up on the south side of Muncie, Indiana and is a graduate of Muncie Central High School.

Dennis Tyler Career

He served as a Line Captain for the Muncie Fire Department before retiring after 42 years of service. On January 4, 2006, he was sworn into office as a member of the Indiana House of Representatives, where he served represented District 34 for six years. Tyler served on committees that focused on veteran’s affairs, public safety, employment labor, pensions, roads and transportation, autism and government reform.

During his tenure in the House, Tyler was an advocate for victims of violent crimes, introducing legislation on intestate succession, which states that a parent may not receive an intestate share of the estate of the parent’s minor or adult child if the parent was convicted of causing the death of the child’s other parent. Tyler resigned from the Legislature in December 2011 to assume the duties of Mayor, effective January 1, 2012.

Tyler and his administration have re-opened two fire stations, consolidated animal control, re-initiated summer programming in the parks, graded more than 30 lane miles of roads and 70 alleys, presented more than 50 proclamations, received almost $8 million in grants, and announced nearly 100 new jobs and over $3.2 million in new payroll, representing over $30 million in new capital investment. Tyler has been active in many community organizations, including United Way of Delaware County, Indiana, the Knights of Pythias Lodge #37, and the Fraternal Order of Eagles #231 in Muncie. He has been the Chairman of the Labor and Industry Board of the NAACP since 2010.

Tyler did not run for re-election in 2019 and will be succeeded by Dan Ridenour, a member of the Muncie City Council and financial officer.

Dennis Tyler Arrested

On November 18, 2019,

Tyler was arrested Monday by the FBI as part of a major public corruption investigation that has caught several officials in his administration.

The indictment accuses Tyler (76) of stealing state funds.

The prosecutor said he accepted the US $ 5,000 from a Sanitary Department official in exchange for using his influence in awarding seasonal contracts.

The prosecution would imprisonment for a maximum of 10 years.

Tyler appeared in court on Monday and was released under unknown conditions, the station said.

Indianapolis US Attorney Josh Minkler planned to release more details about Tyler’s arrest at a Monday afternoon press conference.

Earlier, FBI Indiana spokesman Chris Bavender said Tyler had been arrested at his home at 7:30 am local time.

“I can confirm that an arrest warrant was executed this morning at Mayor Dennis Tyler’s home and that he is currently in detention,” he said.
