Dennehy enlisted in the United States Marine Corps from 1958 to 1963, including a brief stint on Okinawa. In a 1989 interview he described being hurt in combat and in 1993 he told an interviewer he had served in Vietnam. In 1999, he apologized for misrepresenting his military record.
In the comic book series Ultimate Spider-Man, that series’ version of the villain Norman Osborn was rendered by artist Mark Bagley to resemble actor Brian Dennehy, on instructions from writer Brian Michael Bendis.

Elizabeth Dennehy wrote on Twitter on April 16, “It is with heavy hearts we announce that our father, Brian passed away last night from natural causes, not Covid-related. Larger than life, generous to a fault, a proud and devoted father and grandfather, he will be missed by his wife Jennifer, family and many friends.”

Celebrities and fans alike took to social media to offer tributes to Dennehy. “Just devastated to learn that the magnificent Brian Dennehy has died. They is no one i enjoyed working with more.
