The 44-year-old’s wallet still has not been recovered as police are waiting to see if anyone uses his bank cards.
I just really hope he’s alive, because thinking about the alternative yesterday was . . . I don’t even have words for it,’ Johnson’s girlfriend Jaclyn Trop told Car and Driverover the weekend.
‘I was completely gutted, and I would still feel that way if they hadn’t found the bike.
Trop and Johnson had spent the previous weekend together riding around Los Angeles on the Honda CB1000R bike he was testing for Motorcyclist magazine.
They went their separate ways on Sunday as Trop flew to Florida and Johnson took the bike to Las Vegas.
On Tuesday he took off for Mammoth, California, and was driving through the Sonora Pass that evening.
Trop said she didn’t hear from Johnson for about 12 hours before he messaged her around 2am Wednesday and apologized for not reaching out, saying his phone had died and he’d been making his way down difficult, ice roads after the sun went down.
‘I had a great time before it got dark,’ Johnson texted. ‘That part of the Sierra is just stupidly spectacular. Anyway, I’m so sorry I worried you. Yes, I am okay and alive, but I am WIPED.’

A few hours later, Johnson sent photos of a creek he was sitting by to a friend. He did not describe his location but said he was on his way home.
His phone last pinged a cell tower in Amador County.
Authorities began searching for Johnson on Saturday morning, one day after he was due to arrive at his home in Sacramento County.
Trop said she had trouble getting the police to take her missing-person report seriously, and that it took close to eight hours to convince them to trace his phone.
‘I just hope he’s figured out how to stay alive,’ Trop said. ‘It’s been 72 hours since he was last heard from. I think people can survive that, even if he was lost by a river.’
