Dave Bookman was born on May 30th, 1960 and died on May 21st, 2019. He was a Longtime radio personality and Toronto indie music champion. Bookman was just nine days short of his 59th birthday.

Bookie was a well known and revered personality within Toronto’s independent music scene as an announcer. He joining the CFNY-FM in 1991 as a street reporter.

He worked for CFNY off and on for three decades and was known for 102.1 the Edge’s Indie Hour, Bookie’s College of Musical Knowledge, and Nu Music Nights at the Horseshoe Tavern.
Bookman was best known for his radio interviews having chatted on many occasion with major music acts such as U2, Oasis, and Lenny Kravitz.
He also presented Edge radio Rock of Fame awards to Coldplay, Foo Fighters and The Tragically Hip.
On Tuesday, former staffers at 102.1 the Edge remembered his enthusiasm for the music community and its artists.

In June 2018, Bookman won the Canadian Independent Music Association’s Unsung Hero Award.

The association said in a news release on June 4th, 2018, that Bookman was “known for dragging indie music out of the nineties and into the ears of Toronto and all of Canada as the original tastemaker.”
Bookman lived the “Canadian Music life’” during his years at 102.1 The Edge and Indie88, the association added. He was the midday announcer at Indie88, where he started in 2013 and hosted its Sunday Morning Rock Show. It described him as one of Canada’s top radio interviewers, discussing music with everyone from Dave Grohl to Ray Davies.

In April 2019, Indie88 said on Instagram that Bookman “fell ill” and was “under the care of doctors.” In a later post, it said he was in serious but stable condition.
Dave Bookman Death and Cause
Dav Bookman died early Tuesday, May 21st, 2019. He was 58 and just nine days short of his 59th birthday. His close friend, Josie Dye said in a statement “Beloved member of the Central Ontario Broadcasting family and well known Toronto radio personality Dave “Bookie” Bookman has passed away. Indie 88 Host Josie Dye says Bookman left us, peacefully, at 12:45 Tuesday morning.”
