Christopher Gnem was a missing sailor identified after found dead following a 40-hour search after a marine training mishap near San Diego was from Stockton, a family friend confirmed to CBS13.
Marines have identified the 8 Marines and 1 sailor who died following the sinking of an amphibious assault vehicle off the coast of California.
The service members were assigned to Bravo Company, Battalion Landing Team (BLT) 1/4, 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit and were training off San Clemente Island when their AAV began taking on water. In total, sixteen were aboard the AAV returning to amphibious warship USS Somerset (LPD-25) after operating on the island the day before.
The United States Marine Corps says the search for seven seafarers and seafarers is called on Sunday and is assumed to be dead.
The Marine Corps First Campaign experienced a setback with an amphibious attack vehicle training exercise on the shores of San Clemente Island, where eight people disappeared on Thursday.
In total, 15 seafarers and 22-year-old Christopher Gnem was in the vehicle during the drill.
The Marine Corps section at Camp Pendleton in Southern California also confirmed that Gnem’s identity and involvement in a press release sent Sunday night.
The press release said that Gnem is a hospital company with Bravo Company at BLT 1/4, 15th MEU.
A sailor had previously been declared dead. A total of eight were rescued and two were taken to local hospitals.
Gnem’s friend said the sailor is a 2016 graduate of Lincoln High School who loves basketball and judo.
There were comments in other social media posts that Gnem was a compassionate, funny, humble and always smiling young man.
