The Greater Cincinnati community has suffered a great loss with the death of Head Chef Avelino Rojas Vargas of Covington’s KungFood Chu’s Amerasia.

 

The restaurant announced via a Facebook post that Vargas passed away on Sunday due to complications of COVID-19.

 

Vargas was a talented chef and beloved member of the AmerAsia family, in addition to his own family, whom he leaves behind.

 

The restaurant wrote about their team member and his impact on their business in the post.

 

“As a chef, Avelino cooked with a passion and soul that was connected by a deep understanding of what makes good food. He was not a conceited chef; he’d roll up his sleeves and do many of the difficult chores most chefs would refuse to do. over the decades that he worked in Cincinnati and NKY restaurants, thousands of people have had the privilege of tasting his cooking, including those of you reading this now.We truly believe that if it were a different time, perhaps he would have received the recognition that many chefs of his background deserve, “the post reads.

Continuing with, “Avelino was not just a chef. He was most importantly a dedicated son, husband, and father, and is survived by his loving wife, son, and four daughters. He loved his family and was their champion. Their lives will be irrevocably changed by his loss, and we ask for your kind words toward the Vargas family and the KungFood staff in the coming weeks. ”

Chef Avelino Rojas Vargas passed away on Sunday. A GoFundMe has been arranged to raise money for the funeral expenses.

According to the post, no other AmerAsia staff has tested positive for the virus and “(Vargas) did not work when we were aware of any symptoms or of a positive COVID diagnosis,” the restaurant says.

Moving forward, the restaurant will be maintaining a carry-out only model indefinitely in order to keep their team members safe.
