In his text messages, Patterson summarized all the ups and downs he had been through in the last four years without his father by his side. She talked about how she beat cancer and has been taking better care of herself as she promised her father would. She talked about how she finished college and graduated with honors and how she fell in love and broke her heart, “(you would have killed him),” he told his father.

“I regret not having been there when you needed me most, but one day we will have the opportunity to see that game,” he wrote in his last text message.

This week, Patterson received a response from a man who had been receiving his daily messages for the past four years.

“My name is Brad and I lost my daughter in a car accident in August 2014 and her messages have kept me alive,” the answer said. “When you send me a text message, I know it’s a message from God.”

“I’ve heard you for years and I’ve seen you grow more than anyone,” Brad said. “For years I wanted to send you a text message, but I didn’t want to break your heart.”

He said he wished his daughter had become the woman Patterson is. “I’m sorry you have to go through this, but if it gets better, I’m very proud of you! PS I think your father would be happy to know that you bought another dog instead of having children.
