Catherine Mayer was born in 1960/1961. She is an American-born British author and journalist, and the co-founder and President of the Women’s Equality Party (WE) in the UK. Mayer was married to Andy Gill, the guitarist with Gang of Four who is reported to have died at the age of 64 on February 1st, 2020. The Band confirming his death said that Gill passed away after a battle with a short respiratory illness.

She moved to Britain as a child when her father, theatre historian David Mayer, came to research a book and later secured tenure at Manchester University teaching Ben Elton and Rik Mayall. Catherine Mayer was the founder of the Women’s Equality Party. Mayer’s co-founder in the group was comedian Sandi Toksvig. She was president of the Foreign Press Association in London from June 2003 until June 2005. Mayer worked at Time from 2004 to April 2015, serving as Time’s Editor at Large, Europe Editor, London Bureau Chief, and Senior Editor. In July 2017 she filed legal action against Time on the grounds of age and gender discrimination] This prompted other journalists to seek legal advice and ended with an “amicable resolution” in 2018

In 2011 Mayer wrote Immortality: The Pleasures and Perils of Living Agelessly about the pros and cons of people living longer. Her 2015 biography of Prince Charles, published as, Charles: The Heart of a King, published in the US as Born to Be King, generated worldwide headlines with its claims of dysfunction in the royal courts. Clarence House, which had facilitated access to the Prince, distanced itself from the book. Mayer stood by the content. The book was a Sunday Times Top Ten bestseller.

Her non-fiction, Attack of the 50ft. Women were published in 2017. The book covers the benefits of gender equality and how it is being promoted in various countries and has been described as “a compelling feminist call to arms”.

Gill’s death was announced by Gang of Four on 1 February 2020. Andy Gill, the founding member, and guitarist of British post-punk band Gang Of Four has died aged 64.

The musician’s scratchy, staccato riffs provided the band with their signature sound and influenced the likes of Nirvana, Fugazi, and Franz Ferdinand.

His bandmates announced his death in a statement, saying: “Our great friend and supreme leader has died today”.

The band’s statement read, “This is so hard for us to write, but our great friend and Supreme Leader has died today. Andy’s final tour in November was the only way he was ever really going to bow out; with a Stratocaster around his neck, screaming with feedback and deafening the front row. His uncompromising artistic vision and commitment to the case meant that he was still listening to mixes for the upcoming record, whilst planning the next tour from his hospital bed.

“But to us, he was our friend – and we’ll remember him for his kindness and generosity, his fearsome intelligence, bad jokers, mad stories and endless cups of Darjeeling tea. He just so happened to be a bit of a genius too.

“One of the best to ever do it, his influence on guitar music and the creative process was inspiring to us, as well as everyone who worked alongside him and listened to his music. And his albums and production work speak for themselves. Go give ’em a spin for him…

Besides his wife, Gill is also survived by his brother, Martin. Mayer was also Time magazine’s London bureau chief. In 2019, Mayer stood in the European Elections in London. A few months earlier, in May 2019, the Women’s Equality Party one their first seat in local elections.

Following Gill’s sad passing, Mayer wrote on Twitter, “This pain is the price of extraordinary joy, almost three decades with the best man in the world.
