Caris LeVert injury
Caris LeVert injury: Brooklyn Nets guard Caris LeVert sustained what appeared to be a severe right leg injury during the second quarter of Brooklyn’s game against Minnesota on Monday night and was taken to a hospital.
LeVert was racing back to try to block a shot with 3.7 seconds remaining and his leg bent awkwardly when he landed.
He spent several minutes on the court being attended by medical personnel while the crowd at Target Centre fell silent. Timberwolves players huddled in prayer while Nets players surrounded their injured teammate, who was taken off the court on a stretcher with some Nets in tears.
Replays of the gruesome injury were not shown in the arena.
The Nets said LeVert would undergo a full evaluation at the hospital and further updates would be issued as available.
Coach Kenny Atkinson called LeVert “the heart & soul of our program” while teammate DeAngelo Russell said he quickly looked away trying “to erase it from my memory as soon as I could, but it doesn’t work like that. It hurts”.
Fellow teammate Joe Harris said the mood in the team completely shifted after the horrific injury with players breaking down in the rooms.
“You could just feel the emotions of everybody. Guys were crying (at halftime). It was really just that horrific to see. The type of person Caris is & what he’s been for our team, you’re heartbroken and overwhelmed with emotion,” Harris said.
LeVert, a former first-round pick in his third season, was averaging a team-leading 19 points entering the game. He had 10 points, five rebounds and four assists Monday.
The eerie silence of the Minnesota crowd was compounded by the sight of Brooklyn’s bench players looking visibly shaken as their teammate was attended to.
Timberwolves players huddled in prayer while Nets players surrounded their injured teammate before he was wheeled off the court.
The emotion immediately extended to the entire NBA community with superstars LeBron James and Chris Paul leading the tributes to their injured associate.
