Byun hee-soo is a South-Korean soldier. In addition to that, he was the first transgender soldier. He has passed away. And this comes days after being forcibly discharged from the military.
He was 23-years-old.

Hee-soo became the pioneering transgender soldier from South Korea. According to The Guardian. Moreover, she was a staff sergeant. And she joined voluntarily in 2017. Later in 2019, she went to Thailand for gender confirmation surgery. Because she was accepted into the army.
The transgender community is restricted from joining the military in South Korea.
Byun Exit from the Military
After her surgery, he was forced out of the military. In addition to that, the defense ministry classified her loss of male genitals as a mental or physical handicap. Further, in early 2020, a military panel ruled that Byun would be mandatorily released.
Byun pleaded on camera to be reassigned back. Her pleas were however declined by and then sued on the basis of unconstitutionality. The National Human Rights Commission of Korea (NHRCK) agreed with Byun.
Forcibly discharged transgender soldier sues Army
Prior to his death, Byun had attempted suicide. A mental health counselor raised alarm after Byun becomes unreachable on February, 28. She was then found dead in her home.
Byun Hee-soo, who enlisted in the South Korean army as a man and wanted to continue serving as a woman after her sex reassignment surgery, found dead at home- Yonhap reports.

Byun Cause of Death
There are no reports on what lead to his death. In the meantime, it’s being treated as suicide.
