Miami Heat officially announced on December 19 that they had waived former Orlando Magic guard BJ Johnson. With this final cut, head coach Erik Spoelstra‘s 17-player roster is now complete for the 2020-2021 season.
The act of releasing the 24-year-old guard / forward was not surprising. Earlier Saturday, Miami announced that they had signed a two-way contract with Max Strus, which meant Johnson was released before 5pm. deadline.
According to NBA.com, Johnson played in Syracuse before signing for La Salle, played with the Orlando Magic in 10 games and averaged 8.3 minutes, averaging 3 points and 1.5 rebounds. He played 28 games with the G League team and averaged 22.9 points, 6.4 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 2.07 steals.
First signing a contract with Heat on December 4th, Johnson faced fierce competition for one of Heat’s existing two-way contract. Eventually, these two points went to Strus and Gabe Vincent.
Before releasing Johnson, The Heat began shortening its roster on December 16, renouncing two promising young players. Coach Erik Spoelstra’s camp staff dropped to 18 after the release of non-duty guard Breein Tyree and international candidate Paul Eboua.
After going out of draft in 2020, Tyree signed a contract with Heat on November 25. A two-time ALL-SEC player, a former guard of Ole Miss, he helped the Rebels lead the 2019 NCAA Tournament. As reported by Clarion Ledger, he led the team to score in the middle and senior class, with an average of 17.9 points per game and 37.5% from a 3-point range.
Fun fact: If the name of the 22-year-old player sounds familiar, it’s because his 6-foot, 195-pound ballerina cousin was former New York Giants star David Tyree, who caught the crazy “helmet grip” during Super Bowl 42.
As for the 20-year-old Eboua, the 6-8 striker grew up in Douala, Cameroon and played in Italy for the last three seasons. Lega Basket announced the NBA Draft in 2020, which finished the season with an average of 7.4 points with 5.3 rebounds per game, shortly after playing on loan with VL Pesaro, Serie A team.
Heat is ready to kick off the next season after signing the following 17 players. However, Coach Spoelstra did not reveal the team’s starting 11.

The team’s first regular season match will be played on Wednesday, December 23, against Johnson’s former team, Orlando Magic. The Heat’s home opening at the American Airlines Arena is scheduled for Christmas Day. They will take Zion Williams and New Orleans Pelicans, a team they lost in pre-season matches.
