Asante Blackk is portraying the role of Kevin Richardson in Netflix’s mini TV series ‘When They See Us’. Kevin was only 14 years old when he was arrested in the connection of the Central Park Jogger case.
During an interview with TV Guide Asante revealed that playing Kevin was more emotionally taxing than other roles he’s played before: “Usually it’s very easy for me to snap out of the emotion but for [the courtroom conviction] scene, it was crazy hard to snap out of that.”
During an interview with MTV Asante had this to say about the film; “People don’t perceive kids of color as kids. They see them as grown men, really, or as grown women. And it shouldn’t be that way. [We] should be able to live our lives as kids — to be able to explore the world, be able to make mistakes, and not have the world have such a glare at us all the time.”

‘When They See Us’ is a film based on real-life events that happened in 1989 when a woman only known as the Central Park Jogger at the time, but later revealed her name as Trisha Meili, was raped and beaten almost to death during an evening run in Central Park.
At around the same time the incidence happened, they were a group of about 30 teenage boys entered Central Park from 110th Street and 5th Avenue. Taking a southeast route, some of the boys intimidated and assaulted passersby. They threw rocks and sticks, and others beat a male jogger so badly that he had to be hospitalized for two days.
