According to the report, on Oct. 2, a 9-year-old boy and his 10-year-old friend were riding scooters in a church parking lot in Riverton, a Salt Lake City suburb, when they encountered the suspect.

The children told police that a woman, later identified as April Shurtleff, 37, entered the parking lot in a car. She was holding her phone to its side in a way that appeared to be recording the children, which they said made them uncomfortable, according to court records obtained by the newspaper.

The two friends left the parking lot and then came back, but Shurtleff was still there.

The boys continued to drive their scooters, and as they drove behind their vehicle, Shurtleff rolled down her window, allegedly showing them her Taser and yelling “I’m going to fuck with Tase!” Court records allege. .

Still on their scooters, the two boys began to pull away from Shurtleff, but she began “backing her car out of the parking lot and driving toward the children at high speed,” so much so that the 9-year-old said police were afraid of being struck by the car, according to court documents.

“Shurtleff put her arm around the (boy) from behind and placed the Taser on (the boy’s) chest, activating the Taser for about four seconds,” the indictment documents allege.

As the boy screamed and cried, Shurtleff fled the scene.

After the children reported the incident to police, authorities asked for the public’s help in identifying the woman and her vehicle, which was recorded on security camera footage, according to KSL-TV.

It is unclear if the police found Shurtleff or if she turned herself in, but she did eventually offer her side of the story to the police.

First, Shurtleff claimed that he did not have a Taser. She later acknowledged that she had one, but claimed she did not use it, reports KSL-TV. Shurtleff claimed that he told the children that he had a taser and that if he used it, the two boys would fall to the ground and defecate, but he denied using it, according to court records.

However, investigators recovered a pink taser pistol from Shurtleff’s vehicle. After comparing it to the marks on the boy’s chest, Shurtleff was arrested.

Shurtleff is charged with second degree felony child abuse, two counts of aggravated assault for a third degree felony and two counts of misdemeanor constituting a threat of violence.
